please help me with my mixing dilemma....how do YOU mix?

i just have a problem with getting multiple songs sounding exactly the same

a)i wouldn't consider that a problem...i'm sick of every album i hear now having the same "sound" all the way through from start to finish

b)if you're super-bent on having the same thing from track-to-track, mix one song, create a template of the mix and plugins, and load the template onto another track. if you can't do that in your DAW, write down every little thing from 1 session, and replicate in the other.

1) Switch to Mono.
2) Mute everything but bass and drums. Set volumes and eq. Do not pan.
3) Solo the vocals and clean up the tracks. Eq. Do not pan.
4) Play all tracks together and set the volumes. Do not pan.
5) Once it all sounds good, switch to stereo.
6) Start panning
7) Final eq and cleaning up.

Granted, Im no master at this either, in fact my mixes are quite bad.:o

lately, i like to occasionally check my mixes as i go along by muting the overheads (not the rest of the kit)
then by muting the guitars (with the overheads back)

can be intresting, especially the muting the overheads part.

(usually mixing rock, etc....)

and i dunno about you guys but i have some sessions that have over 80 tracks, and 2 minutes to wait PER track is a long ass time of clicking copy.....paste..........copy.......paste

Wait! You're doubling 80 tracks?????????????????????????? (Even if you meant 40!!!!!!!!).

Why in god's name would you do that?

And why would you need 80 (or even 40) tracks for what you described as straight ahead rock/pop???????

If you've been full time for that long you should have an MO sorted by now. Sounds like you've developed inefficient habits that inhibit your listening.
I, like several others, mix bass and drumss 1st as there's spo much potential for overlapping, muddying etc. From there work from that to the next potential muddier.
Consistency in tracking makes presets & set piece/trick easier but I'm as consistent as fecal coliforms in hamburgers (always there but the depth varies) so each track is a new experience for me & I LIKE IT LIKE THTA - but I'm not feeding anyone on the basis of turn over so I'm happy with my little goldfish version of things.
I usually bring the vox in last as they're the last things I get my hands on.
BUT, my mixes are usually pretty poor & I go to the MP3 MIXING CLINIC to workshop them to a state that posters/responders figure it's met most of its potential.
I then tweak a mix to my taste and to the intended listeners' taste to compare & contrast.
In terms of the levels/vols I'm waiting for the day when I can pay an Master master to master a few mixes. At that stage I'll expect him/her to bring out the magic wuffle dust of clarity & consistency that I've had to save up years to get.

I usually get all of my stuff recorded so that it sounds as best as it possibly can. From there, I start with the drums. I get the drums sounding good and then I bring in the other instruments. Its important to keep drums/percussion relatively prominent in a mix, especially since it is whats keeping the beat! But, after I mix the instruments in with the drums, I bring in any vox tracks. You have to make sure that the vox stays above all, for the most part. I reference everything to the drums, though. YMMV.

doubling tracks?? what are you talking about? haha theres no doubling, my sessions can get rather large, say 16 tracks for the drums, maybe more if im using different samples for say the snare renforcement (big small and accent)
2 rythem guitar tracks consisting of usually 2 amps each, sometimes multiple mics, plus the direct signal for reamping. sometimes Bass amp DI, mic, and a DI before the amp so thats 3, i can easily get up to 80 tracks, so what i was saying is, copying 80 tracks worth of plugin channel strip settings one by one, is VERY tedious...

Either the drummer hit the snare exceptionally loud, or wallace boosted it for that one hit. listening to the drums though this song, it seems like wallace played with the levels all over the place...its awesome.

Wallace has a tendancy to ride a lot of stuff during mixing from what I gather. On Nevermind, he said he would often push the cymbals up a bit for choruses to add to the energy and back down for verses, for example.

As for consistancy, I've always believed that came in the mastering. When I working on a CD last year, I mixed each song individually. Mastering was where the consistancy came in for me. Often flitting backward and forwards between tunes. A/Bing them against each other. As mentioned, the track order comes into it aswell. It was something I thought quite hard about, often following heavy balls to the wall tunes with more mellow melodic stuff. Not exactly alternating perfectly, but also not keeping too much stuff that was too similar in timbre bunched together. Sort of like, a couple of heavy tunes, followed by a mellow one, then a heavier one, then a couple of mellow tunes..etc etc.

I usually end up racking up quite a lot of tracks. Because my drums are done with battery, it wasn't a major hassle for me to have an individual track for each drum piece....2 kicks, 4 toms, a snare, 2 rides, 2 crashes, a splash. Add 4-6 rhythm guitars(distorted), 2-4 clean guitars, couple of acoustic guitars, 4 harmony guitars, couple of leads, 2 bass, 2-3 vocal tracks, effects and samples. And then there's the orchestral sections I use on occasion....

And then sometimes I'd have way less than that. :p
