First of all I don't play or collect Basses at all. I collect Guitars and amps. My son plays bass. I do know a vintage instrument when I see one. Anyway I visited on of my regular pawn shops today, and to my amazement they had this vintage bass and were asking $59.99 for it. I didn't know at the time it was a '74,but I knew by the look of it that is was either a late 60's or early 70's. I tried to get them to come of the asking price but they wouldn't. I went ahead and bought it for $64.64 out the door. I got home and eventually found out it is was a '74 Jazz Bass. I'm going to give it to my son for his as on of his High School Graduation gifts. I still amazed that I was able to snag this baby for so little. By the way, this thing is REALLY Reliced. It's been beat to hell, but is has a really cool look. The serial number # 544557 dates it as a '74. Anyway, here are some pics of the bass.

I totally love this stuff... excellent find !! damn..

I was looking at the receipt and I got screwed out of my case. Damn! I'm going have to go back and demand my case.I was so excited about the bass, that I didn't even worry about the case. The thing is that if it's the original case, then it's worth some cash.

Theres some wear & tear on it, but it's still in fine shape. It looks like the plastic bar from the pickguard has been moved to the pickup area-usually that was just removed like the metal guards that most Jazz Basses came with.

C'mon, I didn't get a grad present when I finished my three years in '78 - all my friends were given new cars etc. I got a hand shake. This would even up the score being from the same era and so forth.

Wow. She's purty. You certainly did get lucky there! I wish we had pawnshops around here whose pricing wasn't "powered by ebay".

On the flip side, i really feel for whoever's house was broken into by the meth or crack addict who ultimately got about $40 for that bass. hope they had it insured!

I'll give you $66 for it. That's $1 more than montage. :D

cheers,
wade

So any clue as to why it was so cheap?

I mean, $65 for just about any bass is a good deal, much less a vintage 74 Fender jazz.

What the hell was up with that pawn shop owner?

Man, I thought the pawn shop deal days were over.....great find!

That galloping sound you hear is from thousands of people jumping up from their computers and running to pawn shops....

Very nice find friend. I noticed that you have a Sewell amplifier. I played one of these amplifiers at the Guitar Center. It was $2000 for a 20 watt amplifier. The Sewell amplifier had a nice clarity but the gain was too much for me. You have the only other Sewell amplifier that I've seen.

i've gotten some good deals at pawn shops before, but that's just flat-out disgusting

good score, man...good score

Thanks TBRHD. I have the Texaverb 25 which is a hotrodded Deluxe Reverb and sounds really awesome set for clean and running pedals in front of it. I'm not sold on the overdrive at all. I also bought a Blistertone 35 head which was a hotrodded Vox/Marshall style amp. I never warmed up to it and sold it so I could purchase a Brown Note D'Lite 44 "ODE" head. It's basically a Dumble style clone. Anyway, here's some pics of the Sewells.

in my short experience with pawnshops - these days they estimate value via the internet and probably sell all the good stuff on eBay, while hanging up the no-brand cheap nonsense on the wall of the show room. Even that is overpriced (but negotiable).

Too bad - there'll be a lot of good stuff pawned in the coming years.

Is that the pawnshop right on main st, around the corner from H.E.B?

Heck of a steal man....
