I think Ive heard the Saffires are DICE II as well.

You have to be careful with focusrite, most of their rep comes from a design model long long long gone. They were purchased by their current owners who did in fact make a few good pieces of gear, but also what appears to be more of the rebadged chinese junk.

If Im going to buy rebadged chinese junk, Im getting a behringer ADA8k, why pay more just for a name?

I DO have a chunk of super high end mic pres and stuff from Manley, Focusrite and others, but really that stuff is just for peace of mind and the last 2% difference you can wring out.

Stable drivers, songwriting, playing skill, are all so much more important to me. I've made a mess of albums on the cheap junk and most of the time been just as happy with the results.

If MOTU can get their act together, that 8Pre is a SCREAMING deal, I cant say that enough. Get one of those, add a behringer ada 8k and you got 16 channels of super low latency I/O

Really? I couldn't find anything about whether or not dice 2 was in the saffires. Maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough... I'll do some more digging. I e-mailed them directly to find out, so I'll let you know.

The 8pre is really nice, it's just more than I care to spend right now. I'm sure I'll upgrade or add more stuff to my setup later, so I'm not too worried about getting top-of-the-line quality or anything right now. I really only record my band, so... yeah.

If you can figure out a way to work it with 8 in puts or maybe ten with the spdif, I've been able to pull off a few albums on a firepod.

Like all of the presonus gear, it is laid out extremely well, with so many of the functions right where you need them. The trouble is a high failure rate, super high latency drivers, and excessive cpu use for the drivers themselves.

I wouldn't bother with the frustrations of the firestudio or firestudio project.

My band is just me and one other guy right now, so there's no way I'm going to need more than 8 ins any time soon. The Focusrite, assuming it's not Dice II, seems like a pretty good deal to me, considering what I can get it for. As long as they're halfway decent preamps, they should be fine, plus it can be used standalone, which is a big help to me if I need to go gigging.

its up to you. If it works that will be a good deal, but at that price you are only 100$ short of an 8pre from GC, and well over a used firepod.

Don't make any assumptions that the lower ended Focusrite mic pre's will be any better than behringers or presonus or whatever

I like that the focusrite has the XLRF's on the back! Depending on your needs its a curse or a blessing. For small mobile stuff, front is handy, but for set it and forget type mobile stuff back is definitely preferable

Mkay. Thanks for all your help, pipeline! Don't know what I'd do without people like you to save me from myself...

Unless they've changed something recently, the Focusrite Saffire line is BeBoB-based. Here's a quick list of a bunch of devices and what chipset they use.

awesome! you are a lifesaver!

Im gonna do some research here. Why would manufacturers chose DICE-2 over BridgeCo?
