I just recieved a brand new sm57. i put it into my interface, which has preamps and phantom power on it, but i cant get any sound. My interface is a Zoom h4, any ideas what on what im doing wrong?

Well since its a dynamic mic, phantom would not be the issue, I am assuming that you are using the cubase le version bundled with the unit, you have to change the preferences in the program to use the h4 as the audio input and not the factory sound card, if you did that already then check your asio driver.

SM57s never work properly until they've been dropped onto a hard surface at least half a dozen times and been used either as a weapon of combat or as a hammer to nail something to something else. Spilling beer on it and exposing it to several different people's saliva often works too.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes..

Thank you that fixed it completley.
It turns out it was just a bad mic cable that unfortunatley broke the day i got the SM57.

Wait a minute, aren't you thinking of an SM58? I've heard that people have used those to hammer stages together before concerts, but never a 57.

True, but an EV 666 or 667 works better. They don't call them "The Buchanan Hammer" for nothing. :D
