The Way It Moves
Hey guys, I don't own a ribbon microphone and am interested in getting one but definitely not ready to drop $200+ on one.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Sign up for the Group Buy and you can get a couple of ribbon mics for $110 + shipping.

It's been funny to see the group buy threads bouncing up and down here, alongside a bunch of recommendation threads where the group buy mics probably are the best choice, based on price and functionality, and yet you don't see them mentioned.

I agree -- I love my group buy ribbons. The downside was that I had to wait for a really long time to get them, and then I had to retension the ribbons on two of them (that may not be true for the next GB, since the manufacturer is aware of the issue). The waiting part is a significant departure from the normal retail experience that we're used to, and that may be why you don't see the gushing recommendations that you sometimes should. (I also got a retail cheap ribbon mic that had the same sagging problem and a lower quality ribbon, so it's really just the waiting part that's different).

The upside is that they're pretty well built, easy to mod, awesome sounding, and cheaper (when you get them via the Group Buy) than anything else I've seen on the market.

that doesn't obligate you to anything, but then you'll be able to see what's for sale, along with some (but not much) description. The pricing is there, too. As part of the guidelines, we don't discuss the pricing on the board here - the information has to be accessible only to those who've signed up.

On the less expensive side, I'd consider 2 ACM-3s. That new tube ribbon (the ACM-900) looks cool, too. I've got an ACM-3 and an ACM-2, and they're both good.

I'm guessing because there's certainly a little bit of a gamble in buying them because you can't be absolutely sure of what they're going to sound like. But going with other people's mic recommendations isn't really any different.

For someone who is looking for "cheaper" in the economic sense, the GB mics are an attractive alternatve because they're not just less expensive, they're SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive. So if someone can be patient and wait the 6 months it might take to get them, it's a steal. And the fact that others have bought some of these before us and have extolled their value, makes it an even more attractive option.

I'm getting a bunch of things on this GB. It's just silly not to. I'm getting two 73 pres and two 81 pres, two ACM-3 ribbon mics, two ACM-310 small condenser tube mics, and two of the 1200 mics. I'm most excited about the pres and the 1200s. Getting four channels of something that sounds damn close to the Neve (indistinguishable by some ears) for $800??? Why wouldn't I buy that? And then 6 mics, four of them tubes, two of them ribbons, for another $500??? Even if they're not right for me, I'm fairly confident I can sell them here or somewhere and recoup what I spent on them. It's really a no-brainer for me.
