Slowing becoming un-noob.
I figure it's about time that I get a backup guitar.

I'm currently using an ESP f-100fm. With upgraded pickups. I love it, can't get enough of it.

So I'm looking for a cheap/decent backup guitar. I could just get another one, but I sort of want to branch out.

I'm definitely on a budget. $300 is my absolute max. Above that, just isn't worth it for me.

24 frets is a definite bonus, but I guess I could do without.

So I'm just looking for any suggestions.

I love Telecasters, and have always wanted to try out a strat. But am REALLY iffy about Squier. I don't trust them.

Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Thanks!

P.S.
Possibly an agile guitar?
Like this one maybe?
http://www.rondomusic.com/sstp90ash.html I like the natural look. And I've heard great things about p90's.
or this one maybe...

Alright, definitely consider them.
Thanks.

That Tele copy looks like a sweet guitar, solid alder body, string thru body for extra sustain, Grover tuners, and a Tele will stay in tune better than a guitar with a whammy bar. Another cool thing is that there are single coil sized humbuckers you can add without routing the body and coil tap the humbucker for even more sounds-Teles are such a cool guitar to modify...;)

how about another ESP then mate?
i have had my ESP LTD EC300 for several years now

im just about to move from Scotland to the USA
and its one of the VERY few guitars im gonnae ship ovber
thats how highly i rate it!

24 Frets/P90 soapbar pickups
Looks very like a goldtop

SUPERB guitar it is

and if i remember correctly,
it cost me less than $300 a good few years ago
i dare say they will go for less now
do yourself a favour!

i just noticed the Tele part

so i can also VERY highly recommend the Samick Greg Bennet Series Tele copies

as they are tremendous guitars in every way
they look great,,sound great,,and are cheap:cool:

So what's wrong with the SX strats? are they poor quality? They look pretty decent.

Anyone know of any good strat or strat copies that are decent quality? I really sort of feel like I want a strat. So yeah, just wondering.

sx just need better tuners and hardware maybe. pickups if you're picky. i think they are a great buy and very impressive for the price.

I just stumbled across these guys

http://store.guitarfetish.com/xaviereguitars.html

and the reviews I've read are all good. I figured they're cheap enough that even if they needed some upgrade work, it'd still be a good deal. The guys I read reviews from said they didn't need any mods or tuning heads so I thought it looked even better.

They're on my short list now...:D

more options, mang..........

true that..i loved mine..until i kind of screwed it up...and now i need a new neck haha. But its a good guitar regardless!

Yamaha Pacifica all the way. Awesome guitars and more man-hours on them than an American Strat.

Yeah, if I was in your shoes, I'd buy a pacifica. Humbucker in the bridge, great neck, stock pick-ups are very good. Trem is okay too.

i have an xaviere xv-700 and it is an excellent guitar. very nice neck and fretwork, but the fretboard could have been nicer. its a little dry and dull looking (but might just need some lemon oil)

the pickups are great stock but if you don't like the sounds ceramics give you, you should probably change them out. i swapped the bridge out for a dimarzio air norton and kept the stock neck pu.

For an entry level strat and a hundred dollars, the quality is fine. But, I think a used Fender MIM strat is a better choice and the neck has a slimmer profile making it easier to play than the chunkier SX strats. Overall, I think the SX fretwork, hardware and pickups could be improved, but it would also raise the price point The SX is still a great value and comparable to the Squire Affinity strats, if that's what you're looking for. I would still go with an MIM if I was looking for a strat in your price range. A lot of players like them and for good reason.

Yeah. I've been playing for 4 years or so. I want an instrument that is decent. I've definitely been looking at the MIM strats though.

Props to Monsterpop. I love my ltd. I can get so many great sounds from it. Very versatile... as well as stylish!

great for smooth rhythm as well as raunchy whining leads.

EDIT: Plus it's pretty sexy.

Obviously you have a lot of choices!

If I were you and wanted to "branch out", I would just go to GC and spend a couple of hours just noodle'n around with different guitars and see what strikes your fancy.

Go solid to hollow, hummer to single, big-name to little-name, new to used, etc. It's amazing what's out there. I've been buying/selling/trying guitars for 35 years and still find new guitars that really sing.

Just start shopping, you'll find something.
