Anybody here tried the Bogen tube amps that go for cheap on Ebay?
It is tempting to pick one up to use for a guitar amp.

Also, I found a local place that is selling Bogen mic input transformers dirt cheap. I have looked at one up close and it seems like a nice quality unit. The model number on it is TM-200A and it has a 9 pin base. Searching the web doesn't turn up any specs at all. I found a schematic of a Bogen amp that shows the pinout of the transformer and another place is selling them for $76 each. From another source I learned that the part # indicated the primary impedance - 200 ohms.

From what I have read regarding specs of some Bogen PA equipment it looks common for their mic inputs to have a 50hz to 20K frequency response. Another spec sheet I found was for their 600 ohm line matching transformer which had the same frequency range. The accompanying graphs showed a decent looking response curve too.

Is it worth using this to build a cheap preamp?

Sorry to dredge up an old topic but I thought some folks might be interested.

What if I were to tell you that you could buy a transformer input discreet transistor preamp with a discreet transistor compressor/limiter, a passive EQ made with inductors and a discreet opamp output driving a fat OPT for roughly $10 - $20?:eek::eek:

Would you think I was hitting the pipe too much?

I mean, shit, we're talking about the channel strip of the Gods here. There's no way you can get all that for so little. Right?

I think you can. :D I will attempt to prove it too. Bear with me for a week or so and I will give you all the gritty details. I am waiting for a certain package to arrive. I'll let everybody know the model number and schematics and such then...

I'm basing alot of this on mostly speculation at this point. I have done some dissecting of curbside trash items and looked at lots of schematics and spec-sheets but have yet to hear a sound.
Sooooo, we shall see. I have found something containing all the cool shit I mentioned earlier but have no idea what it sounds like yet.

Stay tuned :D

Bogen "junk"-gear are hip! Kind of my favorite :)

Yeah, I should go out more, but, then the problem is, that I'll pick up anything and everything with a wire or a switch in it ..heh heh, and there'is three dimensional limit in my cave.
So, I use eBay and craigslist, this way at least a few bucks due combined with the pack of inconveniences privide some reasonable level of restriction on my "activities". :D

here's "your" (who ever may "apply") chance, :)

Oh you're the guy with those preamp/mixer units? I emailed you through Ebay about the input trannies a few days ago....

That repair shop was a little Korean place on 136th St. and they were always throwing good stuff out. They would take a blowtorch to parts to keep people from restoring the stuff. One day I went in there with a Korean friend of mine as a translator and after that I got dibs on things before the torch hit 'em ;)

Oh you're the guy ...
nop.

I'm a guy, frequently searching eBay for "Bogen Mixer" 'keyword' :)

I amctually always 'hunting' specifically for MX6-A (s) - little things with goods :), used them as hearts and livers for THIS and THIS :D
I have a 'dream' to build 4 (or maybe 8) channel two bus all tube mixer. It would be a major project, if ever ..grrrrrrr :(

I am going to make a new post on Bogen MPR-6 mixer/reverb, it may be useful for something for a reader around here.

/later

Just so you know I have 3 Bogen TM-200 input transformers if you need them. I paid almost nothing for them so I'll trade for anything of use to me - I have a very long list (parts).

I also have schematics for the pinout of the trannies as well as the zobel network they require.

I paid almost nothing for them ...
sell them on eBay, let people have fun :) , then re-invest the cash asap :D

********
OR!!!!!!!!
..., just keep them.
You never know what idea may fall on your head tomorrow after the storm and you may want to "inject them" somewhere they have never been nor ever dreamt of being".

- "Where are my trannies?! Where are my trannies!!!!"
heh heh

Mike,
here's link to the project I have in my "save folder", I've found it while ago when I was working on my first bogen tube preamp/mixer thing.
In case you have not seen this page before.
This is for MXM tube mic pre/mixer, you may find it interesting to look through:
http://www.clarkhuckaby.com/BogenMod/MxmMain.html

I've got 3 Bogen tube mixers with stock transformers. They're worth every dime (well, at about $120 certainly) and they really make your guitar and bass tracks come alive. They have a reasonably good amount of head room, the only issues with my MXM-As is that the power supply needs to be rebuilt, which isn't a horrible undertaking as the Photofacts are readily available for cheap.

Never played with the Bogens but I do have an Altec 1567a which is probably similar. It's a high-quality all tube PA preamp from long ago with 4 mike preamp inputs, all with high quality plug-in transformers made by Peerless, plus a 5th high-Z input all mixed into a master section which has bass and treble controls and a master output. It has a transformered, 600 ohm output. I paid a tad over $200 for the thing. Good stuff! I use it as a single preamp or for tracking drums in mono with a few mikes.

Cheers,

Otto

Mike, check this out, this may be a 'somewhat identified not-so-flying object' of your interest : http://cgi.ebay.com/prokit-6-channel-vintage-audio-mixer_W0QQitemZ330220781781
maybe not, but it got some 'stuff' :)

I see some big fat input transformers. Otherwise, it seems pretty basic - minimal active circuitry. Probably has an interesting lofi vibe to it.

I am currently drooling over this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130208000087&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=003
Very tempting since it's so close to where I work :D:D:D
I only wish it had more mic channels...

Believe it or not I am STILL waiting for the damn Bogen amp to arrive...

Mike, by "got some stuff" I mean the "stuff" to be taken out of what ever "circuitry" there may be, and stuff to take off the shafts, off the plates and off anything that holds something , heh heh ... ;)
so it went for thirty bux plus "from me to your door" service fees ... that's what I call a 'nice deal' for a DIYer, well, sort of.
*******
wow, that Collins looks sharp

I was watching this junker for some time, but it's a bit too far from where I'm and it rather quickly was transformed from a "nobody cares $9.99 deal primary" to a "WWF event secondary", well, sort of.

I'd say go for it. The transformers alone are worth the money and that chassis looks easy enough to re-purpose.

it is pretty neat. I'm quite curious about those plug-in line amp modules. I have a feeling it won't be such a bargain in a few days ;)

I saw that. The magic word "tube" is gonna be the big draw for this thing. I think you could fill a metal chassis with ratshit and advertise it as a "Tube Box of Ratshit" on Ebay and the same thing will happen. :D

In that light I say buy any solid state with transformers gear you can get your hands on while you can still find it at bargain basement prices.

Oh yeah the Bogen amp finally arrived today. I'm looking forward to seeing if this baby will live up to my expectations :)
