The Way It Moves
Hey everyone. I recently finished recording one of our songs called Blind Design. I am just starting to focus a lot on mixing lately and am looking for some critiques of this mix I made. I also do not have monitors (yet) and am mixing through various sets of headphones and a Philips home stereo :D Feedback is appreciated. I may turn this into a mix shootout just to see what people can do with it.

Here is the URL to the song:

Original mix:

New mix (boosted low-mids):

Thanks everyone!

Listening as I type this. I like the sound. Good song, got some cool changes and the dynamics are there. Not sure of all the lyrics. Could you post them. At first it sounds like, I am S I. Then I am inside.

I like the guitar work. This has a Doors flavor to it. Nice bass line and staccato lead. The distorted git drowns out the vocals a little.

The mix is pretty good otherwise, but I'm hearing some crackling around 2:10 - 2:45. Could be my machine, but I don't think so. The whispering doesn't work for me. The sense of being invaded is apparent with out it.

Great git break at about 4:10 or so. Synth tracking the notes of the guitar, it seems.

Overall very cool song, but the overdriven git makes the vocals a bit thin.:D

Cool, I was noticing that myself. I think the guitar is a little overbearing during parts too. The crackling is the song. For some reason, I was getting a lot of buffer crap going on when tracking the bass and couldn't fix it, even by increasing buffer time. Not really sure what was going on.

By far your best mix to date for sure. :)

It does have an almost complete lack of low mids though. It sounds very thin. Also, the verb could use some work. I'd re-track the bass as well, you cant have that crackling in there. It also appears at the beginning of the song.

I am guessing this was tracked much better than your previous stuff too!

:D

How do I fix this low-mid and "thin" problem? I know I shouldn't put an EQ on the final mixdown that boosts appropriate ranges as it won't sound proper, I'm guessing.

I'd deal with it on a track by track basis. Did you cut a lot of low mids on most of the tracks?

Yeah, a lot of them except for the kick, the toms, the bass. Do I need to put low-mids in the vox and guitar?
