If you're giving people one free, why the $169 to Paypal? I smell something fishy.

Spelling & grammar errors = scam.

I'd stay away from it.

Think about it: Why would they need beta testers for the "new released" product (note the grammar error found in the quote from the offer)? Beta testing is done BEFORE a product is released, not after.

Yeah, I told him we would "test" for him, but he's not gettign any money. That wil show if they REALLY want something tested. You know we don't exactly hold any punches.

I wouldn't even reply to messages like this with any email account you use for anything but spam catching, because, by replying you're validating an active email account, which they will then either sell to "questionable" marketing firms and/or pass the email address amongst their little scammer networks and you'll get inundated by several emails per week about internet lotteries you've won (but never entered) and such...

Fun stuff, no?

Absolutely. If they want one tested, they can read this thread. I'd be willing to put one through the paces, but know that putting it through the paces means me sitting on the phone (or maybe in a room) with folks who debug FireWire gear professionally, sticking a bus analyzer on the thing, doing load average tests, checking it against multiple types of FireWire host silicon, testing it in the presence of other devices that misbehave, testing how it handles bus resets and other bus noise problems, testing its power draw, testing to see if its inrush current draw is within specs, testing whether its phantom power is at the right voltage, testing whether the phantom power provides enough current to drive hungry mics without pulling the bus voltage out of spec or drawing more than the maximum allowable continuous current, and recording a sine wave for a day and comparing the results to a clean sine wave, noting any dropouts.

Then and only then would I actually try recording.... Most manufacturers would not welcome the sort of testing I would do. :D

Oh, and because these tests would take several days worth of my time, they would have to pay me, not the other way around, and they would have to agree to pay me the same fee whether I gave them a good review or a bad one. Fee to be determined based on the number of hours spent at a rate commensurate with experience.

Actually, its a legit company. Samick is making its first entry into the Pro Audio market. They're just, obviousally, very mis-guided about their marketing.

What's the deposit for? Do they keep it if you don't hold up your end and write a review?

You wouldn't be writing a review, you'd be testing the unit and writing bug reports to them on it over a period of time.

I've done beta testing and it can be somewhat time consuming.

I'm not sure about that deposit thing though. It sounds like they want to make sure they get serious people and not folks who will just take the unit and run. Or maybe it's a rip-off, who knows. Anyway, there must be a better way to find beta testers than require them to pay suggested retail to test the product. I know the money is to be refunded once the test report is in, but still I've never heard of it done that way.

Beta testers don't usually get paid. All that fancy firewire testing stuff would presumably already have been done by their development team. They are probably more interested in compatibility issues with various operating systems and computer platforms. End user type issues, which is why they are opening it up to beta testers.

However, I do find the statement "starts shipping next week" to be a bit odd. If they are looking for beta testers you'd think that the unit is further away from shipping than next week.

The whole thing seems odd to me. Not so much the deposit part, but the fact that they are openly polling for people to do it. It seems to me that if they really wanted solid reviews and endorsements of their product, they would approach people directly, meaning specific people. It seems like they are just trying to compile some good reviews for advertising purposes. It doesn't seem to me like they are really out there to get feedback or meaningful and purposeful reviews. At least if it were my company, this is not how I would be going about it.
