I have always considered Musicians Friend innovators. Today, while studying stereo miking techniques, Musicians Friend introduced me to a new microphone technique. Take a look at the instructional image and give it a try on your next session.:)

Musicians Friend's XY stereo microphone technique

Yeah, real innovators. That's not "XY" placement, at least to the rest of the recording world. Nor is what the picture shows a new microphone technique - it's basically a sloppy version of ORTF, which has been around for decades.

I know it is not "XY" but I'm pretty confident that is what they intended...

The jokes on me then haha.

I know what ORTF is but it just seemed like they were setting it up for x-y. Wouldn't you typically want the grill of the microphone rather than the butt at the front.

If I were taking a picture of ORTF I would take it from the other side. Ill look at the connectors in another picture...

I've done ORTF with SDCs before, but was wondering how it'd work out on cardioid LDCs... might try it tomorrow.
