Hey there,

Just a quick question. i've browsed the forums and havent got the solution yet so any help would be appreciated.

I've purchased a Shure SM58 for some vocal recording. It came with 1 lead. I put it through the left Mic In channel on my Tascam US-122 interface, and that through to me laptop. obviously, only the left channel is picking up the signal, and so my vocals are all the way to one side.

How to i record the vocals so they are central? A mic surely cannot be plugged into both the left and the right Mic Ins, as the mic itself has only one output.

Any help? Do i record in mono/stereo?

Also, the volume is all the way up, but i have to sing miles away from the mic or it gets distorted. but when i do this i cant hear my voice being amplified! Even though it then appears fine on playback...

help!

your track are not really recorded the the right or left, Cubase is just setting it the right by default. If it was recorded as a stereo track you may have to unlock from the other track. But I do not think Cubase sx dos that. all you should have to do is click the center of the panning control at the top of the slider in the mixer and that should set it to center. You can move it left to right and put your track wherever you want in the mix.

Record the vocal in mono if you are only using 1 mic. No point in recording stereo if your only using 1 mic.

Have you tried pushing the direct monitoring button on the track you are recording too? Its a small round button (when in record mode) with the image of a speaker on it. It goes brown when direct monitoring is active. You need to have a very low latency set up for this to work though. When direct monitoring remember to turn off your normal monitoring volume or you will get phaseing as you will hear both at the same time with a mall delay between the 2.
