would like to buy two mics for
- vocal recording (male/female)
- mike acoustic guitar
and/or solo instruments e.g. flute & harmonica

hopefully, within US$250

thanks!

Naiant MSH-1 for acoustic guitar - $22
There are sound samples on the site and I use it myself so if you want to hear it let me know. Don't let the price fool you.

Maybe an Audio Technica for vocals. I've only used the AT2020 and the AT4040. 4040 is slightly out of your budget on its own. The AT2020 is good for vocals from my experience. But your budget may give you room for a better one.

I will agree with this statement - I've tried many mics between 100 & 1000 dollars and none has captured my acoustics more accurately than the MSH-1s. Don't get stuck thinking that because a mic looks pretty or has a larger diaphragm, that it is going to work better, as well.

As for a vocal mic, that's far more subjective. 2 MSH-1's would run ya about 50 after shipping, so w/ 200 left? One of the AT's might work, and the MXL 960 has also been getting some good press around here - do a search and read up on em. The MXL V67g also gets good press here, but I haven't used either, so I am basing all this on prior reading.

How about a Shure SM58 for vocals?

I just picked up wth Beta version and I'm really pleased with the detail - bit more expensive than the standard SM58 though.

Not tried the SM58 with female vocals but this is supposed to be the industry standard mic for vocals and generally gets good reviews.

not too sure about what to use for instruments, hopefully others can advise.

A pair of the Naiant MSH-1 omnis and a CAD M179 would be a great start to a small home studio.

I wish I had simply read this and taken this advice when I spent cash on the first stuff for my studio... like many, I have gone through so much crap and resold most of it, only to end up loving those cheap little omnis and my DMP3 :p

The only thing I would recommend on top of those for acoustic recording is a good LDC, tube or not. I love my Rode K2 for my voice, with the tube swapped, but the AT4040 & 4050 are cheaper (AFAI recall), and also yield great results for a lot of voices.

Agreed on all counts. Alternatively, a used CAD M9 is a good pick for the vocal mic, too, IMHO.

It's more of a live sound reinforcement thing, though...

For acoustic guitar and vocals condensors of some sort are probably the way to go, but if you're going to expand past that, I can't think of a single situation where it wouldn't hurt to have a SM57 on hand.
