I've had my eye on this mic for a while...and I found a few of em for about $250-$300.

But what I was wondering is how much of a step up from a Studio Projects B1 it is. Right now I record rap vocals at a home studio, if that makes a difference.
 
...and if I can't? What else is good for rap vocals at that price range?
 
If you can't get decent results on rap vocals with an AT4040 then something is wrong and it's not the mic's fault. :D

I've used both the AT2020 and AT4040, although, AT4040 the AT4040 only briefly.

I've heard it on 2 people's voices and I tried it on acoustic guitar. It sounded excellent on all of them. Obviously, some mics work better for some people, more so than others, but if you can get the mic for $250-$300 that's what I would personally do if I were you.
 
The AT 4040 goes for $300 at banjo mart anyway, but they are regularly on ebay for buyitnow at about $240.

And I would definitly recommend it. I have a pair of B1's and I hardly touch them unless I want a stereo pair because of the AT

The AT40xx line is really superb. the AT4040 is a great vocal mic. If you follow the link in my sig to my songs and listen to KickOne feat.Darco - Conexion Internacional , you'll hear it on 2 rappers. This was done a couple of years back and isn't brilliant but it'll give you an idea..i guess?


Either way I've used it on loads of stuff from rap vocals to female singer stuff, acoustic guitars, guitar amps, drum OHs etc and it's all been good!

Number 1 choice for overheads and many other tasks. Buy one, then be prepared to buy another.
 
Whats the difference between the 4050 and 4040 im guessing more controls on the 4050? omni? and bidi?
