question about integrating audio & MIDI in sequencer

Currently I have ACID Pro 6, but will consider picking up Sonar or Ableton [or other recommendations if what I describe below is functionally and easily implemented]

How can I map specific wav files stored on the computer to be triggered by my external keyboard MIDI controller for use in tracks? Once this is done and a track is created using those samples, there will be no need to keep the external controller connected for playback of the track, because both the MIDI commands and the audio will be saved in the ACID project, right?
Also, how can I create my own "VST" instruments based on personally captured samples, VS. commercial VST instruments?

Finally, what are some of the best VST drum kits available? [acoustic kits to be used in hiphop production]

I know there are several questions here. Thank you much for any info provided.

Sounds to me like you want a sampler. Check out Kontakt, Gigastudio, or any of the other software samplers out there.

Robert and Tim, thanks for your input. I'll certainly look into your recommendations. My question remains, though-- I know that in ACID [and in other sequencers on the market these days], a person can readily dial up a soft synth [stored on the host computer where the sequencer is located] to be used in conjunction with a hardware controller, in order to create tracks in the sequencer. All I am looking to do is use my own personal samples as opposed to those supplied by a soft synth. Are you guys saying that the sequencing programs out there cannot facilitate the triggering of wav files through MIDI [i am mostly concerned with a bunch of individual drum hits I captured] in the same manner that they allow triggering of VST samples? I assumed I just was missing something about how to map the wav samples to my keyboard. Please let me know if my question is unclear...

many thanks.

Following Robert D's post (and the link that Tim posted), those soft samplers will let you load your own WAV samples, map them to your MIDI keyboard, and trigger them like you would any other VST sampler.

I believe the mapping process is usually done on the sampler plugin itself.

Thanks, I'll check them out now. I was just hoping I wouldnt need anymore gear/ software, since I already have a sound editor [soundforge] which I use to get the samples just how I need them for tracking. I'm transitioning from a full hardware set up to integrating my Triton [which I'll be using as controller and playing the soft synths with] and MPC [which I'll use to trigger the drum samples] into my new virtual setup. I also have Fruityloops. I wonder if that has the capabilities I'm talking about. It seems so simple, I wonder why it's not standard?!

Respect,

Lef

I believe Fruity Loops will do what you seek.

Thank you sir...I just got the software the other day. I'll check it out in greater detail. Just how to map the personal samples to keys didn't jump out at me so I asked here. I'll RTFM!

Peace

Hey Lef,
I think there are some sequencer programs that do rudimentary wave playback from from midi triggers, but if it's not supported in what you currently have, then you're shopping anyway. And if you're gonna shop to achieve this function, then why go about it half assed and end up with a very limited and slow (high latency) solution.
On the other hand, if you are looking to upgrade your sequencer program anyway, and want to achieve this function in the process, AND you just need to trigger a few waves, not create whole instruments, then maybe something like Cubase or one of the other recording apps can kill two birds for you. But from your original post it sounds like you're looking to create your own VSTI's, and that's going to be a job for a real soft sampler.

Robert, thank you for the info provided. I think I overstated my intentions. I actually really only meant creating multisamples that can be played across a range of keys. Nothing terribly intricate. In fact my "multisamples" will be single samples of different drum kit components spread across an octave, or mapped to the MPC's pads. I don't know much about creating sound from scratch and am only talking about triggering existing wav files for my samples. After reviewing the links provided by you guys I am thinking that something like the SR-202 would be ideal, unless I can get the Fruity Loops sampler to work for me. I've been digging through the manual and still am not clear on how to link up stored wav files with the keyboard. Of course the SR-202 is unavailable for D/L!

Once I get around my gear tonight I'm sure I will puzzle it out.

I am looking at Native Instruments Battery 3. This looks like a monster program, and exactly what I need. Thanks for everyone's help!

PS> I am looking to sell my Triton Pro Classic [76 key] and Akai MPC1000 sampler/drum machine. If anyone is interested pls send a message.

Best,

Leffield
