??How to put snares on??

well i feel like a total dick asking this question but... how the fuck do you put snares on. Ive done it many times before but maybe this time im just forgetting something. I changed my bottom heads so i had to take the snares off and now putting them back on they dont sound right, i must be doing something wrong

The snare bed must lay flat against the head. Also, the strand should be centered between each side of the hoop.

Make sure they're not upside down either...that's an easy mistake because the "right way" is almost counter-intuitive. Notice the tabs on either end of the strainer assembly are slightly angled, not flat...the tabs should point away from the head...not towards is. Check that, and make sure like ez said, the wires are centered across the drum. The only other problem, may be that the tension is not properly adjusted, but that should be pretty obvious and easy to figure out.

Yeah, I think I'm doing it right. I'm putting the side where you can see the strands soldered in place, down. Could it be possible that because the snare is not really tightened yet, the lugs are about 3-4 half-turns above finger tight.

Oh by the way, i broke one of the nylon tabs because i tried using the tabs from my 42 strand on my 12 strand and the slot on was too small for the tabs so i kinda forced them in, so now one is broken. Do they sell just those at a place like Guitar Center. I'll have to go find some.

Another thing I do when changing heads is completely loosen, not remove, all lugs but keep the rim on the drum. Remove one lug from the hoop, take the hoop off the drum, then put that one lug into the same mount it came out of. This ensures the hoop goes back on the drum in the same position it was in before you removed it.

Yeah, thats a good idea. Making sure everything sits right.

Now I used what I could from the broken tab, and got the snare on there and then i really tuned it alot higher, SAME PROBLEM. It almost sounds like I don't even have the snares on at all, sounds like a snare with the snares released but then you can just hear the snares bouncing around. Something is wrong! I mean the one tab is broken but it was just long enough to fit into the latch on the side of the drum, so it seems like I should be getting results. Maybe my 42 strand is bent or something. I think I'm just gonna buy a new 42 strand when I go to Guitar Center. Dammit ALL!
