AKG D112 , Audio Techica ATM25 and Audix D6 are pretty commonly used currently produced kick mics. RE-20 is also very good. I've also got a Beyer M380 and the aforementioned TGX-50 (which is the more modern version of the M380), although I like them better on bass cabs than kick.

I have the D6 and ATM25. Of the two, I like the ATM25 a bit better for country and americana style music. The D6 has a bit more of a modern sound and seems to go better with rock, metal and the like. Just my opinion.

No love for the SM-7?

I'm not a big fan of the D112 myself. I have used just about every kick mic on thee planet. I would say the e602 or the nd868 would be my second choices.

What did you find worked best in terms of positioning and placement with your TGX-50, if you don't mind me asking?

For me on my kick (batter head only) it was about 4 inches inside the drum and pointed from slightly off center towards where the beater struck.

and the aforementioned TGX-50 (which the more modern version of the M380), although I like them better on bass cabs than kick.

That's exactly the duty my TGX-50 took up after I got my RE20!

Oh, an aside here...

The Beyer was a birthday gift, but it wasn't the mic I was expecting. My girlfriend at the time had come with me on a trip to the music store (I was getting sticks and heads, I think), and the subject of my birthday came up as it was nearing. She asked me if there was anything in the store I really wanted just as we were passing by the mic display in the drum section. I pointed at the D112 and said "I could really use that!" But from her angle it must've looked like I was pointing at the TGX-50 sitting right next to it, so that's what I got. I've come to love that error!

If you really want to get fancy with the Drumagog option, you can look into getting Drumagog BFD. The Drum kit From Hell sample base is amazing and has just about every metal drum kit sound possible. BFD has other kits which fit almost every drum sound possible (even percussion instruments).

Yeah, you can use the SM7 for kick too. Actually it works pretty well on just about anything. But I actually like some of these other mics better for kick than the SM7. On vocals or cabs or toms however . . . . .
