egg carton for acustics?

i have a couple of friends that have had studios for about 30 years and some of them say that putting egg cartons on the wall actually helps out room acustics. what i want to know is. is it gonna help any? i mean ..is it really worth the trip to the ihop dumpster?

Do a search, this has been discussed to death. But the short answer is NO. Egg crates are useless for anything other than storing eggs.

You all are very negative.

There are some good things about egg crates, and nobody ever talks about them.
For example: They make a great firehazard. If you want your space to burn down - then this is the way to go! It's cheap, easy to install and doesn't require a degree in physics to understand how it works.
Those expensive foams you always see advertised are actually fire "retardant"...which of course they don't advertise very well.....and basically means that if you light them on fire - they do NOTHING for you arson-wise. It's pathetic for what you pay for them.

So there. The truth. I'm sure Ill get flamed - but fuck it. Someone has to fight the sheeple.

Ask them lots of questions about recording.
Then do the exact OPPOSITE....

First, DON'T call your home owner's insurance company...they'll dump you on your head when you have the fire and if should you survive to attempt to collect. On the up side, if you don't have the fire before you get a chance to do some recording...you'll find that it won't do a thing for your final product but, it might make your dry cleaner a few bucks getting the dumpster stank out of your clothes.

DON'T USE EGG CARTONS! DON'T!!!!! Oh hell, I thought this one went away. Next, question...which is better, the SM57 or the SM58! Where's Blue Bear?
 
well. im not into burning down studios. so im gonna put any on...and..the dudes that told me that were actually playing a huge joke on me and they were gonna laugh at me whenever i put it in...how miserable...

Actually, egg cartons (the 1 foot square separators used for bulk eggs) do have some limited acoustic properties, primarily at around 800-1kHz and another peak starting around 6 kHz - this was actually TESTED some years ago at RAL - here's the test result -

about 25 years ago (when I knew about as much acoustics as the first poster :=) I did this treatment to a section of wall behind my drummer (band practice room, 12 x 36 x 8' high) because we were getting constant feedback around 6.3 kHz - I stapled the egg separators over carpet padding so they wouldn't rattle.

It actually WORKED. (If you look at the above link you'll see WHY it worked)

However, the fire hazard AND the uneven response makes it really dumb (kinda like I was at the time :=)) Steve
