I have roughly 400-500 USD to spend on a new interface

I am looking at the PreSonus Firepod and the MOTU 8pre 16x12. I know there is a pretty big gap between the two price wise but what other interfaces should I consider?
 
have you looked at the focusrite sapphire - they have a few different models - im probably going to get the 10. ive heard the preamps on them are great.
 
I've got the Motu 8Pre and I love it. I bought it on ebay for around 450. I have no complaints at all.

I'm also contemplating that as well, but in the end I think I will go with the firepod. I highly doubt I will even notice the difference between the two.
 
Check out the echo audiofire 8 or 12 before pouncing a firepod. But if it's a choice between the 2 you mentioned. MOTU all the way in terms of quality. There drivers are hit and miss though depending on what type system you have. Which is why I suggested the Echo. Have a look at the glowing reviews from the guys over at gearslutz. I mean stuff like on par with Apogee says a whole lot.
 
I'm in agreement with most of the folks here. The MOTU is just a much better piece of hardware in terms of actually working. The FIREPOD has a reputation for blowing out its FireWire ports spontaneously. Mine lost its S/PDIF ports after a mere firmware upgrade (and then took five weeks to get the repaired unit back from Presonus). Go with the MOTU.

Why do manufacturers insist on calling everything 'pro' ?

Focusrite Engineer: "Got a great new interface. Gonna call it the Sapphire 10."
Marketing guru: "That'll never sell. Let's call it the Sapphire pro 10."
Focusrite Engineer: "My God you're right. What the hell was I thinking?"
 
I would get the Saffire Pro 10. After I bought my 8pre I saw the Saffire Pro and wasnt really sure how I missed it in the first place.

I think quality wise the Firepod, 8pre, and Saffire Pro 10 would be pretty much the same. In this price range I dont think it would really benefit you to start comparing pres and whatnot because there wont be much difference at all.

For the price, the Saffire Pro 10 seems to have it all. (Shoot, why didnt I get one :) )

Doesn't look that great from the comments I'm reading about Mac compatibility. Be happy with that 8Pre. :)
 
The MOTU stuff is much more stable and gives much better low latency performance. I personally am not a fan of anything with the DiceII Firewire chipset, which TC Electronic makes and many people use in their fw interfaces.

Any Mackie Onyx becomes a Firewire interface once you add the Firewire card.
