Mixing and Mastering.
I finally got my Firepod up and running last night.
Sounds real nice, and clear.

Only thing I found wrong is that I have to boost the pre-amps a hell of alot to get a signal into it. Its fine for my NT2 but for dynamic mics I had to boost the pre amp to past 3 Oclock to get a half decent level. This cant be right can it?

Is this normal for the firepod?
Maybe it is since it doesn't have pad switches.

Cheers,
Eck

That sounds about right. I've had my knobs darn near maxed out before for certain sources.

But, for loud sources, of course, it does just fine pretty low (9-12 oclock). I figure if they didn't want you to turn the knob that far, it wouldn't go that far.

Yeah when I had a firepod I had to turn the knobs up quite a bit for certain sources/mics. I think it's just the way it is made...the signal was still clean, so I wasn't too worried about it.

Yeah, im probably worying about nothing.

yeah with dynamics, i have to crank the gain pretty high depending on the mic. it stays real clean just up until it's damn near maxed out. 2 or 3 o'clock sounds about normal for vocals on the firepod pre.

I have a 58 on my snare, some MXL603's for overheads, and and e805 on kick, and mine aren't even halfway up....

well on the drums you're not gonna need lots of gain, especially when you got a heavy hitter behind the kit :D

I have the Firebox and I was thinking I had something wrong when I had to push the gain to 4 and 5 o'clock to get a decent signal from my CADm177. I'm sure louder sources like guitar amps and drums would be a different story...but for my appartment acoustic guitar strumming the gain had to go up. (had the 12db boost on too)

I had to turn the gain up full to get a good snare recording volume last night.
And our drummer is a big guy who hits the drums dang loud, and he has a loud snare also. Must be the mic Im using.
Its an old Shure MKIII, and it makes a buzzing noise. Pretty annoying but ok for demos I suppose.

THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN COMPLAING ABOUT ALL THIS TIME. I too have a firepod and i have to push the gain all the way to a little past 3 oclock with my shure ksm27 mic but i thought something was wrong with my firepod. some elese who had a shure ksm27 and a firepod told me that he gets good vocals at about 9 oclock so i was thinking that my firepod is broke but now i'm seeing what yallk are posting here. it wont be as bad if it took this much gain for dynamic mics but for a shure ksm27 condenser mic it should not be that high to produce a good signal. is the firestudio like this too?

Is there a lot of noise or distortion added when you boost it up that high??

If not, than the position of the knob means absolutely nothing.

That does seem too high - unless there's something amiss with the mic like you say.

Typical settings on my firepod are around 9 oclock for kick & snare, 10-11 for the overheads, 1 - 3 for guitar depending on how loud I wind the amp, and 3 - 4 oclock for vocals

No its really clean with no distortion.
Yeah its just a little odd.
Its as if they have added a pad to each channel that you cant switch off.
Works very well though.

Yeah it was the mic. I recorded with another mic and I had the pre-amp about 1 O'clock for the snare.
Yeah I use the same O'Clock settings roughly also.
Thats good to know.
