Midi noob here

a few years ago I swore a blood oath I would never get into midi....but here I am!

So I use an EMU 0404 soundcard. It uses a soft-mixer to route everything, but for some reason, it doesn't have ANY options for midi within the mixer, and I must rely on the recording software for everything. Which is good, it kinda simplifies things.

So I use REAPER. Great program by the way. Knowing nothing about midi, I was still somehow able to get the keyboard I use to somehow kinda work, after setting the track to "Midi CH1" and using a VSTi that gave some sort of generic-sounding organ.

Is it really that simple? Can I just download a free vst of lets say a piano and then I can use that in recording? Hopefully this makes sense. My first venture into midi was like....last night at 11PM.

Yes it is that simple. Your other options are to get an external sound module (this takes midi signals as input and outputs sound) or to use dedicated software within the pc to do the same (e.g. gigastudio).

At the end of the day it depends on what you want to do and what quality you want.

You can get free vst instruments off the net but the quality will probably never be great.

Something like gigastudio is ultra flexable and high quality, but with a price tag to match. Plus it will add extra load on your pc (unless you run it on a seperate pc to your recording software).

Personally I use a sound module which is somewhere in between. The quality is ok, it has about 800 instruments to choose from but that is fixed and can't change.
 
Free ton of instruments: Soundfonts.

Download the free "SFZ" soundfont player vsti from rgcaudio.com and put the dll into your vst folder.
Throw it on a midi track and then load up a free soundfont from someplace like www.hammersound.net

very sorry for my ignorance , but would u plz like to tell me where can I get some waltz drum sample ( 123 123 beats i think ) ? I am just perplexed where to post my this silly query !
Beats may be either in midi or wav format , but I am really in need of them :(
help me plz !
If you think I have posted my query in the wrong section plz remove it then , coz I am just a new comer here and having no background of music , I have just started realizing the power of sound . :)

well,I think I have committed some serious mistake by earnestly seeking some information and help about waltz beats with humble submission. I logged in and found that this has been considered as "a little shameless behavior '' as it is being displayed under user info panel . I'm just shocked and yet to recover from this trauma . As I have already confessed that I'm a total newbie , perhaps I have misunderstood the expression of this topic-subtitle which goes like this ...." Just starting? Afraid to ask a stupid question? Don't worry, in here nobody will laugh at you".
So I think its all my flaw. Perhaps that's because my knowledge of English is very poor . I'm really very very sorry dear brothers ; I think ,unfortunately, I'm not fit for this wonderful place.
So, this is my last post in this forum , I will not bother you anymore with my sad, bad and mad posts .
