mixing techniques

Does any one have any pointers that i can use to try and improve the mix - for instance on an emcee's voice who is nasal - vs. an emcee's voice who is more "bass-ee" - not "raspy" or "abrasive" but "low-bassed" ?

It's all about which mics you use and their placement/environment. Go back and record it again, only this time choose a mic/placement/environment that sounds better on the emcee in question. Every mic sounds different just like every voice sounds different. Sometimes you can tweak it better with EQ but usually, poor tracking will always sound poor. Garbage in, garbage out.

thanks for the suggestions, i will be tryin to work with this - although it is gonna be a killer tryin to get the em cee back i nthe studio anytime soon - i hope i can try some tohter things to get a good sound - this fool might be doin the AKON thing . . . gittin "locked up" they wont let him out!!
 
Choose your tracks wisely, and apply gentle EQ going through a mix buss compressor... also try a limiter

Experiment with your eq to learn where the tones live. That's it in a nut shell. Personally I prefer the 'do least harm' tack as the first attack -cut where it is 'wrong' rather than boost.

For the low end look to high pass, low shelf, or bell dips in the low range. The choice of those filter shapes will depend on whether a) rolling off low end that is not contributing to the good, b) controlling the relative level of that end without changing shape, and/or c) controlling a hot spot hump.
For 'nasal -good luck guessing w/o hearing- it could be 'too much' or a hole depending, anywhere from from 300 to a couple Khz.
