Beatles Cover Thread!

OK, I've been listening to the Fab Four a bit lately, and I remembered a really neat Beatles tune my father in law and I did, so I thought I'd start a Beatles cover thread! If you have done a Beatles tune, post it here, and tell the story!

My father in law and I are working up a little folk-comedy duo (think Smothers Brothers - meets Gordon Lightfoot or something...), we're gonna do a bunch of bawdy traditional folk songs, and some more current (well, more current than 100 years ago) singer songwriter stuff mixed in.

I arranged this version of In My Life for a compilation CD on another board; my father in law Bob is on the two main guitar parts and the vocals, I'm on bass, the four synthesized string parts, the brief guitar solo, and the aux percussion. It's a much more tender, lush, and delicate arrangement than the stock Beatles one. I like it better from an arranging perspective, but ya can't beat the original in a lot of ways, right?

Anyway, here ya go! Take a listen, post your thoughts, and post your songs!

I don't remember the original of this. Nice tune. I like how it sounds. I might try and do one here. I've been thinking of doing a very hard version of Come Together, but haven't tried yet. I had fun bastardizing Tim's version, so might just have to do my own now... :D
 
Haha thats funny! I was just about to make a thread about a cover of Polythene Pam I recently recorded. It's pretty rediculous.



I post on Something Awful and they are making a Abbey Road compilation in the music forum. By time I got to the thread the only songs left were Polythene Pam and Mean Mr. Mustard.


Your In My Life is very cool, I like the chimes! But ofcourse nothing beats the original. Same goes for ANY Beatles cover. It's sure fun making them though.

Your In My Life is very cool, I like the chimes! But ofcourse nothing beats the original. Same goes for ANY Beatles cover. It's sure fun making them though.

Pretty entertaining. Actually put together well for something fun..... :D
 
Sorry, it's a nice recording, but devoid of any dynamics. It has the same beat, sound levels, tempo throughout the song. To Willam Shatner-esque. And, more importantly, you've missed the melancholy remembrance quality of the original which is at the heart of the original melody.

Nice job on one of my favorite Beatles songs. It has a lot going for it. I must agree, however, with tamky's assessment. It just seems a bit too stiff. It sounds to me like the singer is thinking more about singing than he is about the song.

OK, now here's one for you to rip apart. My brother Bob and I recorded this as a gift for our parents. The folks have always dreamed of their musically talented children (a few of us fall into that category) overcoming various factors, such as the geographical distance between us, long enough to perform together.

Bob recorded the instrumental tracks and the "Paul" vocal part at a friend's home studio in Massachusetts on a Roland VS-1680. He sent me a CD with a stereo premix, minus the "John" vocal, which I recorded. Then I created the final mix. (This just to explan the limitations we were working with.)

The folks loved it. I hope you find it at least mildly entertaining.

I might just have to record my cover of "When I'm Sixty-Four" now. I arranged it for my band to cover and it just never happened.
 
I do a sorta jazzy intrumental version of "Blackbird." I'll try to fit in some time to record it soon.

Nicely done with a good feel to it, very similar to the original. Good part singing... in tune and in the pocket, which is no small thing. Reminds me how inventive the Beatles harmonies were.

Actually, your version is a ton of fun! :) Pretty wild stuff!! Almost Devoesque...

We were deliberately trying to make it less melancholy, and more sweet. More "folky".. But, I do appreciate the quirky nature of the original, and I understand your comments. Just the beauty of arranging, you can make it say a whole different thing! :)

Well, to his credit, it was his very first time recording, so he was very unfamiliar with the intimacy of the environment, and he WAS nervous and stiff. :)

I LOVE "If I Fell"... Your version is delightful! Faithful, yet your own signature is on it. You've made it your own, without straying too far from the delicacy of the arrangement. Just lovely, man... :) My only critique would be a VERY slight overbias on the lower vocal part in the mix. The upper sits in the mix great, the lower seems just a teeny notch too "forward"... But not biggie at all. VERY charming rendition!!
