Can this be used for Bass Traps ?

Just curious if this mineral wool can be mounted on plywood and covered with cloth to hang in corners as bass traps. Everything I've read so far indicates that rigid wool should be used. This stuff is about 3.5 " thick but isn't rigid....

Thanks for your help !

I didn't see any absorption specs for that material, so I suggest you get the real deal (rigid fiberglass or rock wool) rather than risk going to all that trouble and having the traps not work well. But I do have another comment: When placing rigid fiberglass off a wall or straddling a corner, you'll do better to not attach it to wood.

Its Rock wool

ROXUL® products are mineral wool fibre insulations made from basalt rock and steel slag. This combination results in a non-combustible product with a melting point of approximately 2150°F (1177°C), which gives it excellent fire resistance properties. ROXUL mineral wool is a water repellent yet vapour permeable material.

Thanks for the replies guys.

So it can't be mounted on plywood. I'm reading your acoustic articles right now Ethan so I see why now.

The reason I was asking if I could use this is because I have some extra sheets of it lying around and the specs seem to be not bad:

125 Hz 250 Hz 500 Hz 1000 Hz 2000 Hz 4000 Hz NRC
0.52 0.96 1.18 1.07 1.05 1.05 1.05

Thanks again Ethan and SOMM.

Dave,

> 125 Hz 250 Hz 500 Hz 1000 Hz 2000 Hz 4000 Hz NRC
> 0.52 0.96 1.18 1.07 1.05 1.05 1.05

Those are great specs. When you get it across a corner the absorption will be even higher.

What's interesting, is that the literature states the dimension of the Roxul for wood studs on 16" centers to be 15-1/4".
When I was installing the rockwool in my studio, the studs are 16" on center - so that makes an inside dimension of 14-1/2", but the RocKWool comes in 16" widths.

I had to trim about 1" off of EVERY SINGLE PIECE I installed!

Looks like these guys have taken that into account and done that for you!
Looks like a great product. I'm sure it'll work out fine.

Man that's a huge room.

I just have to figure out a way to put them in my corners now. I was thinking of puting wood frames on each side wall 24" from the corner then cuting the insulation and stacking it on it's side stacked up on each other from floor to ceiling and covering them with cloth.

Think that would work ok ?
