To all you fellow newbies out there, I found a pretty sick guide concerning mic placement and such. It even goes into pretty exotic instruments like steel drums and such. Check it out.

I tell you what, for newcomers to recording, it's an excellent guide. And not to newcomers only.
It's a grand starting point.

Notice they show the SM81 there! Also notice that most all of the positioning is the same live or recording.
Except for the sitar.

Has anyone tried recording with a pair of KSM44A's for live stereo?

I have KSM 32's so they are pretty much the same. I have used them on acoustic before, though they get typically used (by me at least) on vocals. They are pretty warm though. I am assuming the 44's are similar in sound. What exactly where you wanting to do with them?
