Hi everyone. I recently got a free Tascam Portastudio 488 from a friend. It needed some repairs, so I brought it into a local music store- the problem being with the volume, although I also wanted them to do a thorough cleaning. They just called me with the quote, and it's $175-200- it's basically for cleaning and "repair group #2"- the volume. So, my question is whether it's worth it to get it fixed. Thanks!

Was it a mkII?
$175 is roughly what you'd pay for a 488 on eBay. $300 probably for a mkII.

In general, I think that's a fair price.
FYI, I did the exact same thing, (if you'd care). I bought a 488 "fixer" for ~$50, and paid an additional $125 to have it fixed. Whether that's a wise purchase or not, depends on who you ask. It worked ok for me. I've watched eBay values of the 488, and $175 is about average.
I'd not recommend that you do anything I wouldn't do myself.
