Click Track Track

Whats the point of making a separate track for the click track?

When I open up a Logic session using one their templates, there's always a track at the bottom that says click. Why is that necessary? How do I use it? Can't I use the metronome when I hit record?

Thanks,
Andrew

It's a reference track so that everything will be in synch each time you open a session for adding tracks to this project (by listening to the click track as the reference). The metronome wold serve the same purpose - IF you managed to start it at the same microsecond each time.

I noticed this with some of the Sonar templates.
At first I was equally confused, but I now see its uses...

Firstly it opens up more flexible routing options - you can be more creative with monitor mixes, etc.
Secondly you can automate it, say if a performer wants the click muted for a section with free/loose timing.
