Old farts playing some blues

Nothing special, just a cover of Delbert McClinton's "Why Me" that we cut more or less "live" here at the farm. We were rehearsing in the studio when everyone started talking about when to do a demo,so I yanked out some mics,d.i. boxes and cables and strung it up in about 20 minutes.Everything but the horns was cut on the fly with floor monitors. 2 mics only on the drums, kick and overhead, mono d.i. boxes to bass and keys,57's shoved up to guitar amps etc.

Warning: we are just old blues hippies,so none of us sing very well, but on the bright side, you don't have to look at us. Enjoy and comments and suggestions please, like "you suck, get off the stage:D

Okay, first off...that's a damned nice download speed you've got going there...it's a nice bitrate too...lol. (these are the "pre-listen" compliments, just in case it sucks ass).

(song begins)
horns, vocals, drums, harmonica, piano, bass - holy hell, all of this was tracked live??? ('cept the horns). FROM FLOOR MONITORS?????? Jesus...nice job man. It's got a "live" feel to it I guess, but I'd never have guessed that this was tracked live.

That horn stab at 2:04 might be too loud...I think I know what you were going for, but it's pretty hot.

Lt.Bob needs to hear this. And what are you bitching about with the vocals??? Sounds better than "The Band's" studio work, lol.

Are you "Ricky?" Either way, thanks for posting this. I think it's great.

Hey,thanks for the reply and comments. No,I am not Rickey,my name is Les.I play guitar with this bunch of miscreants.Rickey is the harp player/bandleader/booking guy.

Yep,we were piled up in the room with a couple of monitors for vocals. On this cut we actually did go back and re cut a new Lead vocal track,I had forgot about that, but other than that we just let her rip like we do on stage. I'm gonna go look at that horn stab you were talking about and see if I can fix it.

I hope the download speed wasn't too slow, but I didn't want to put it on nowhere radio since it is a cover.

Thanks for listening!

Lt. Bob's in the house! :D
This is very cool......it sounds like a lot of the bands we have around here. It's called 'swamp pop' here in the delta.
Nice playing and the mix is pretty nice for a live recording. I think for a demo this is more appropriate than a "studio'd up" recording. Club owners have gotten wise to tapes that sound unrealistically good.
The harp ride was very nice. Only thing it could have used was a blazing sax ride....( oooh me, pick me please! ;) )

man, that was very cool.i think the vocals were great.felt like i
was sitting down at the local juke joint.
the only thing i would like to hear different is this:every time there was a turn around i kept expecting some guitar work.it
would be nice if the horns dropped out occassionally and let some other instruments come toward the front.
you guys sound like you have been playing together for a long time.
job well done,
sheppard

Hey,thanks for the comments and complients guys.

If anybody gets the "temporarily out of bandwidth" message, let me know. I just upgraded to a paid membership to stop all that shit and to kick the banner ads off my pages. When I first put the page up,there was a viagra ad on it and It cracked me up because we are all a bunch of over the hill pickers for sure.

Shepperd, you are right about the guitar work, and come to think of it, I just realized I haven't laid my guitar track on this one yet.I get so busy fooling around with the recording stuff I forget to play sometimes.

Lt. Bob,bring your horn and come play with us any time you like. You might not want to come right now because it is about 15 degrees outside and about a foot of snow on the ground.

Peace out!!

hey bob,how do you single out one line of a quote?
btw im 37.5.

hehe,I am 39 pushing the bg 40 mark in november. Most of the guys are between 40 and 50 except the drummer who is like 30 or so,and the keyboard player who is i think about 65. By the way that is Rocky Frisco on piano. He is gracious enough to play with us when he isn't touring with a local guy from here named John Cale. We call him John around here, but most everybody else knows him as JJ. The rest of us except the drummer are alumni from the band of The Flash Terry Band. Flash is a local blues guitar hero around here who retired last year,so we came up with this group to have a little fun with.

Hey man, just delete the words you don't want in the quote. Highlight them, and hit delete button. Whatever's left in between the bracketed B's will be what's quoted.

allright, the band site is back up so I will post a link so y'all can read a little more about us,but the pictures ain't pretty. I am goingto talk to webmaster Rocky tomorrow to see about putting the mp3's there if we have enough bandwidth so we can stop this "page temporarily unavailable" crap

ahh say,ahh say(in my best foghorn leghorn voice)that was a joke son.:D :D :D

sorry about the bandwidth thing,Toki,I bought some more and kicked the viagra ads of my pages,so hopefully it won't have that problem again.

Oh yeah...."call me the breeze'.......he's well known worldwide.

Nice groovin tune btw.Delbert McClinton is a soulful artist that rocks..how he ended up in the country genre is beyond me...the man plays Blues/Soul rock....The singer pulled it off pretty good on this tune...I think the horns could stand to be spread out a little more...they are a little hot at times...all of the lead instruments seem to be coming from the same place in the stereo field when they do their thing.....it might help the mix out to spread those things out...horns,Piano and harmonica could stand to be placed in different areas of the stereo field........the way it is now it sounds like they all line up behind each other and step up to the same mic one after the other to do their solo if that makes sense.LOL...It just needs more stereo spread with this much going on.

Cool cover tune.

thanks for the input and insight,Kramer. I think you are right about spreading things out a bit. I tracked all the instruments to mono tracks and was a little concerned about getting too radical with the panning and having it wind up sounding like an old 60's recording where you hear on thing way over on the left and the other way over on the right, but on second thought, that might not be too bad with the tone and feel of this band. I have been recording songwriters sitting on a stool with one guitar or at the piano forever now. I have almost forgot what it is like to mix a whole band anymore.LOL

Lt. Bob,now you see why I had to get the viagra banner ads off the page,LOL

Thanks for listening!
