Kind of a gothic/electronic/power metal thing.. I am never easy to describe.

Mistral

RyosaMusic
This is about 90% finished, outside of a few missing basslines in the last half and all the vocals. There are also some minor mistakes at 2:00 and 2:42, I know about those. Other than that I could use some feedback, preferably from those who actually listen to metal or hard rock and enjoy it, as that kind of feedback would probably be more meaningful, but of course, anyone is absolutely welcome to chime in.

Download it here: http://www.voxhouse.net/hr - if you see more than one file there for any reason, it's called Ill Omen Nation - Shadow Mask.

It's going to be the first of a hopefully long series of new music I release for free via the net, after retiring my old project Mistral I have done since 2001. I am not really planning an album per se, actually I hope to do something fairly unique as I am an animator too, and I am going to visually tell a story with each of my songs, released via YouTube and other video sharing sites, and then maybe release it as a DVD later. So I want to establish a decent standard with the first song.

With that in mind, feel free to answer any of the below, or just post your own thoughts:

1. What is the first impression / thing that pops into your head when you hear it?
2. Does the production sound pleasant, does it add or detract from the product.
3. If there is one thing you would change or drop from this tune, or do to improve it, what would it be?
4. What is the best part of it to you?

I will answer any questions about gear later as I don't want to make this post too long.
Thanks

Oh, forgot to mention quickly, that the "spooky" synth is mainly a temporary representation of what the vocal melody will probably be at the beginning. So it might not work that strongly by itself as a lead line, but I think that as a subtle atmospheric backing it will feel more proper.

Cool song Mistral. Production sounds really tight on it. I think the vocals/bass lines will add a lot to the finished piece if done correctly. I liked the synths throughout the song and thought they sat nicely in the mix. The only thing I would suggest is looking at the guitar tone. Im guessing your going DI? It sounds very "processed" (for lack of a better description) and also lacked some bottomm end for me. Just my two cents though. Playing is spot on though. Let us know when you are finished...

my only suggestion is the same as dude above me. the guitar tone, especially coming from the left channel, seems a bit over distorted to me. It has sort of that "so distorted I can't tell one note from the next" sound. Sort of just a loud fizzy noise coming from the left.

Other than that, I think it's well written, thought out, and produced.

Thanks guys, I'll check into that. I recorded the vocals today so I'm working on getting the final mix under way.

The guitars are Peavey Revalver MK III on the left and Guitar Rig 2 on the right. I think the overdistortion and lack of low end may have been partially a result of the quick master I did, but I agree the guitars should probably be a bit fatter and less fuzzy.

More fat & less fizz indeed.
I look forward to hearing the vocal replace the synth as it seems a little too synthy for me.
The double bass drum towards the end sounds too plastic/fake - you could get away with a good solid single thwack.
Good structure & ideas. Play with it & repost please.

Well, too much synth and not liking double bass I would argue is a matter of taste.

I do need to tweak the double kicks on some parts because I haven't programmed the multisampling fully yet.. if several notes in a row are all at 120 velocity they will sound "fake" as you said.

Thanks for the feedback!

Pretty good track.
What I'm missing is a fat thumping kick, it sounds a bit too weak compared to the bass. Are the guitars an amp-sim? They seem to lack some fat mids. Pretty good though.

First thing that popped into my head was that it's a good soundrack for You Tube 'war porn'...fast jets blowing stuff up real good at mach 2!

Nice recording...a good listen.

Love it dude! I like metal! Can't wait to hear it with vox and real drums would be cool! Riff is cool! Synth is cool and complimentary!

Hello everyone,

The song is now complete, and online at http://www.myspace.com/illomennation - it is entitled "Shadow Mask". I took the original mp3 down, as I don't really want it circulating. If you've heard the original, great. You'll be able to tell me if I managed to fix things alright. If you haven't, I hope you enjoy it anyways. There is also another track, both are brand new songs. Don't worry, I've already heard that I'm a "Finland native wannabe" (which is ironic since I AM Finnish), so I've got my skin thickened a bit already.

Sounds great now, man!
Nice Rammstein type guitars and the electronic stuff blends very well with the heavy stuff. Well done, love it!
