Hi all,
My new ms-16's pinch roller isn't as supple as the one on my 58-OB, would something like Rubber Renue help? It's hard and shiny-ish. It isn't cracked or chipped though.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
(I searched, but i only found advice on what to do with gooey, disintegrating pinch rollers)

Any chance of finding some Tascam rubber cleaner. It came in a small can usually as part of a set of head cleaner and rubber cleaner. It's good stuff, I can state that without a doubt in my mind because that is the only thing I have used on my machines since 1985 and I have NEVER had a pinch roller fail. In fact they're all like new. 2 38's. MS-16, Otari and Fostex 2 tracks and the cassette machines rollers.

Thanks for the tip Danny, I have a picture of that stuff in my old Tascam Portastudio's manual. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
Do you find it makes the roller 'rubber-ier' when it gets a bit hardened, or have you never had to contend with that problem?

I don't know exactly what it does.
It seems to soften the rubber. It also seems to remove a small amount of the surface almost like it was removing oxidation or something. Sometimes you can find it on Ebay. 1 can will last you for 20 years. I have a couple of unopened kits I had found on Ebay a couple years back. Maybe you can find some too. It's called Tascam Rubber Cleaner / Conditioner. The can has a blue label and it's a 2 fluid oz container.

It's really the best stuff currently made.

... or order one from TASCAM direct but it probably will be a much more expensive route but it's an open option too.

While those rubber cleaners / conditioners work good on shiny, hardened pinch rollers [never use 'em on gooey rubber though], it's only a temporary solution and never works as well as new rubber.

It's like tires on a car. You wouldn't drive on 'em for 20 or 30 years but rather change 'em regularly.
