Beware: Fake Reels On Ebay

A couple sellers in Montreal are selling counterfeit tape reels. Man it’s getting to be a jungle out there, eh?

These are obviously painted with transfer lettering applied.

Some of these have pretty bad paint jobs and the lettering isn’t even straight. The manufacturers represented here never produced reels like these. They are completely bogus. People are bidding on these like they are rare finds… some going over $80.00

For those that don’t know, you shouldn’t be using painted reels on a tape machine even though they might look cool. The paint dust will wear off with any tape rubbing and contaminate the machine. Plus the paint fumes can adversely interact with the tape itself while stored in a box.

Authentic reels are only made of clear or colored plastic, brushed aluminum or anodized aluminum of various colors.

Be careful out there. ;)

people have no shame................

I used to look at a tape spools design when I was growing up & only used to play the spools I liked HEHE

I've got an old grundig spool that's grey plastic with huge square holes. My favourite had to be a white scotch (I think). We have 2 of them & they are just the best thing to see on a reel to reel

I think I've got a couple of aluminium akai spools with 3 long narrow holes per side. In fact I've got a lot of reels & I'veseen a lot more besides & I've never seen anything like what the ebay monster is selling

My Concertone has painted tension arms. It was made in 1952. You can see were the paint wore off from where the tape passes. There are no rollers.
