I'm just curious to know what machines were popular and used in big-time studios in the late seventies. . .
In particular, albums like Aja, Rumours, Hotel California, The Stranger, Breakfast In America, etc. . .

I wasn't paying any parrticular attention at the time, and my activities at the time have apparently caused a significant loss of memory. . .

That would be machines like the MCI JH-24, the Ampex MM1200, Studer A80, possibly the A800 as well, I'm not quite sure when that one came out. The MCI was extremely popular, though.

You should go over to the Sound-on-Sound magazine website and read through their "Classic Tracks" articles.
Lots of gold there, they detail setups and techniques going back to the 50s.

In the late 70's, early 80's, I was using a 3M M79... It had a unique closed-loop transport path... sounded very, very good. Monster control panel & keeping lights working was a pain!

I wasn't alive to see it firsthand lol, but MCI JH16 and JH24, Studer, 3M/Stephens pop to mind.
