TL Audio preamp compressors?

I have received one opinion from another site telling me I am wasting my money and would get just as good results from DBX and save alot of money?

I am just asking for opinions and a little bit of help but it seems very few people have any?

I never tried these combo units, but I did try just their preamp version back in the mid-90s (same vintage/series as the combos).
It was just "ok"....pretty dark, and rather un-stellar sounding...I didn't buy it. Actually, I purchased an ART PRO MPA at the time, which I auditioned side-by-side with the TLA preamp. I also ended up getting an ART PRO VLA, which I still have alongside a bunch of other comps, and yet I use the VLA quite often, it's a decent little comp for the price. The MPA I sold off awhile ago.
I would really check them out before buying them. If I had the opportunity to buy them for $750...I would pass.
For $500, if they work well...more doable.
They might be fine for some things...but just don't expect to be blown away by the sound quality.
