What Microphone For Recording?

Hi All,

I have decided to join up here as there seems to be a wealth of knowledge, so I'm hoping you can all help me out :)

I have a Zoom HD8CD aswell as a range of other equipment including instruments.

I have two carillion active monitor speakers on order and need a mic that records well.

I will be mainly recording pop/ballad tracks. Occasionally, I might want to record an acoustic guitar (not amped/hooked up the hard disk recorder), so something that could do that would be good too... but the essential part is that it must record vocals well!

I'm been advised on the Shure 58 (i think it was called), what do you all make of this mic?

I look forward to hearing your responses soon!

Thanks,
Amnesia

A SM58 is good for live performance, but won't give clarity for recording. For vocals there are a number of cheap Chinese-made large-diaphragm condenser microphones available nowadays. I use a Marshall MXL-990, but they don't seem to be generally available in the UK now. The cheapest of the sort seems to be the Samson C01, while the Behringer C-1 is pretty close.

What about a Studio Projects B1, would this give the clarity I need for recording?

I will look into some more reviews on mics.

I am still none the wiser as there seems to be lots of microphones on that website? Can you get these in the UK?
See this matrix to help you in deciding which is right for your application:

See this thread just posted for UK availability:

I have no knowledge or use of these mics, so can't comment on how good they are or how appropriate they are for your use.
