Nephew got a Typhoon guitar

'Paulownia' body??!!

Looks like any of the Chinese strat clones available for under $100 on fleabay. I got mine for $24.50. Tone is actually not bad, I had to sand the frets down - sharp edges - and do a basic setup. The factory strings were utter garbage.
 
Yep looks like the chinese ones. For the money you get a reasonable guitar.
I'd get a good set up done.
Sort any fret problems as mentioned. They really cut into the flesh if they are too proud of the fretboard edge and will put a newbie off playing.
Sometimes theres fretbuzz problems too. Have a good look at the nut too.
 
Setup is a good idea, he lives out of town so it might be a while before he can bring it in.
 
How is the spring assembly?

Dang ... one fret shy of a double octave. Hope you taught him to bend along with the power cords.
 
My Chinese strat had 3 springs in the trem cavity and I could barely budge the whammy bar. I took the center spring out and its about right now, a little stiff, but that's the way I like it.
 
I showed him bending too - gave him a few exercises and told him to buy a tuner and a Metallica book..
