Open Letter To Mr. Gerst

Dear Harvey,

Over the last year I began selling the
dulcimers I make over the internet. I
have a good bit of recording experience
from about 40-years ago, so I knew
that microphones no longer had cranks
on the side, but still, to provide sound clips to
potential buyers, I needed to advance
my recording knowledge a bit. Umm, quite
a bit.

I found your postings here in the forum,
links to articles you've written and made
available, and even went a few e-mails
with you on some things. You made some
very complex information very accessable
not only for me, but for anyone who wants
to know about mics and such, and that
which cannot be seen... sound.

Your writing is always clear and
understandable, and everything you say
is not just true, but the stuff I might get
to after making every mistake in the book.

And you give it freely.

I've learned something about the "best" in just
about any field. They don't have to keep it
close-to-the-chest. There are no secret
formulas. Newcomers just have to pay dues
and give it the time required if they're to be
any good.

I'm sitting in my little work studio, surrounded
with only the equipment you explained and that
I purchased for far less than some much bigger
names. Over the last few months, I've tried
everything about mic placement that you've
written for us as well. I'm getting great results.
I'm very happy. I still have lots to do and to
learn, but you've jumpstarted me.

I'm writing because on more than one occasion
some of the readers here didn't read between
the lines and see the mentor behind the offering.
Because some readers didn't understand that it's
very special when someone takes from their time
for other's benefit. Some have even been rude.

Despite knowledge being so valuable, since the
internet it seems that opinions and guesses have
replaced fact, and flaming has replaced helping.

You are the exception and the exceptional.

We are very fortunate.

And I just wanted to get these words in while I
see a recent posting from you and know that
you're watching this forum.

Thank you.

Ken

I Absolutley Concur with this man's views. Harvey, you happen to be one of the few opinions that I actually take to heart on this forum, (there are a few others of ya ;) )

Your information is appreciated so much here, you are an absolute gold mine.

I also thank you for being part of this BBS and taking the time out to share your hard earned knowledge and experience with us.

While ken is at it, i'll mention my real name too ;)

Thank you, and happy holidays.

-Victor (aka ^^^)

And I'll third that. Harvey has the patience of a saint when sharing information. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him.

I said it yesterday in another thread, but without Harvey's contributions here, I would not be in the mic business. Thank you sir! :)

Yeah, lemme get out my accordion . . .

Everybody now:

For he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow
For he's a jolly good fellow (pause), and so say all of us
And so say all of us, and so say all of us
For he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow
For he's a jolly good fellow (pause), and so say all of us!

I just left my job at a student studio to move to Hawaii and the dept. director said "I'm really going to miss you. Where can I find information online so I can get myself a bit better at the recording stuff?"

Mind you, he's not a beginner- just younger and never had his own rig. All he knows is our wonky little studio. I've been tweaking recordings for over half my life now...

Anyway, the BIG Mic thread was the first on the list. He called me today and said "I started reading the mic thread. Wow. Most of that is over my head, but I'm going to keep reading it until I get it. That guy Harvey is really good at explaining things, but I've never even thought about this stuff before. Thanks for the link."

He's a bright lad. He'll get it. And so will all the students he oversees.

My name's not Harvey, and I don't recall ever receiving an email from you???

Ez,

You just reconfirmed the fact that sometimes..........................."silence is golden".

Harvey,

There are indeed a few Newbs, (like myself,) who genuinely do appreciate it. Your superb contributions are one of the things that keeps us coming back for more.

Thank you. (Okay, here's a guy hug too.)

I'm guessing Harvey can get a chuckle out of ez....he might be really good with recording stuff, but he's also shown he's human, and likes most people around here.... ;)
