Anyone remember an obscure band that never really made it called Elf? Ronnie James Dio was the singer, and even played bass on the album I had.

[Edited by Tweedville on 01-06-2001 at 07:33]

Yep, and Doug 'Rock' Feinstein (Dio's Cousin) was the guiatarist...Feinstein went on to form the infamous bandThe Rods.

I liked Elf.
More Importantly, I like Ronnie James Dio! hahaha

How about:

Black and Blue
Quiet Riot
Stone Fury
Kix
Icon
Stryper
Wasp
Dokken
Vixen
Michael Shenker Group
Helix
Krokus
Alcatrazz
Rainbow
Europe
Warrant
Whitesnake
Poison
Winger
Living Colour
Twisted Sister
Cinderella
Autograph
Night Ranger
Accept
Britny Fox
Hurricane
Rick Derringer
Molly Hatchet
REO Speedwagon
Ratt
The Storm
Danger Danger
Loudness

Of course, most of us are saying "Good Riddance" to some of those. ;-]

Hi Wes,
What's scary is that with Stone Fury, The Storm and Rick Derringer being the exception(well actually I take that back-DNA Derringer and Appice)-I have seen every single other band in this list at least once, and many of them I have seen more that twice!

Who can forget Danger Danger with their hit "Naughty Naughty!" Seems like somebody in that band had a wire or two crossed.

Here's the list so far - I was duplicating quite a few of the others in my last post. Alphabetized and everything! (yes it's a quiet nite).

Just for laughs:

Saraya

Y & T

I'm embarrased to say that I bought their albums at some point in the 80's.

Man, I have the first Y&T album on "London Records" from like 1976...It's one of my Favorites. Sort of like Van Halen with John Bonham on Drums.

Leonard Haze was an Incredible Drummer, he just looked like an Italian waiter.

Someone's got to speak up for the unsung heroes of Boston's rock and roll scene (a scene from which basically nobody "made it" in the '70s and '80s). How about the following bands, who sort-of-made-it (as well as anyone was gonna in that timeframe):

Human Sexual Response (my personal all-time favorites)
The Zulus
Til Tuesday
Mission of Burma
The Lyres
The Fools
The Rings
The Stompers
Video Free Europe
Death in the Shopping Malls
Judy's Tiny Head

And of course, the all time definitive Boston band, from years before:

The Standels (Love that dirty water!)

Everybody knows about Geils, The Cars, Aerosmith, yadda yadda- but a lot of people schlepped a lot of shit for a long time in the early '80s, and have nothing but scars to show for it. They oughta be remembered.

Gotta tell this story. Here's another one that *nobody* will remember:

Red

This was basically two penniless newly-emigrated German brothers who had a loft space in South Boston, and did performance art that was primordial industrial socialist-leaning angst-o-rama atonal artrock. They wouldn't deserve a mention here, since I don't think that they ever recorded as a unit, except that one of the brothers has since gone on to great things in another musical genre. Their names? Stayfun (bass) and Ottmar (guitar/vox) Liebert...

Ahhhh! But you left out the KINGS of the "North-East Nobodies":

The Good Rats
(Pepe somethingoranother and Joe Franco)

New England
(Hirsh Gardner on Drums. Two of the guys that later formed Alcatraz with Graham Bonnett and Yngwie J. Malmsteen !)

The Ansley Dunbar Retaliation (post-Mayall, pre-Zappa... hey, does anyone know what happened to Mr. Dunbar after he was in Journey and Starship? He was great on those Zappa records he played on in the early 70's.)

Yep!

Ansley Dunbar played drums on the "Whitesnake" Album, that put them all over the Charts in the late 80's.
David Coverdale said "play like Tommy Aldridge" and he did!
Coverdale had plans to get Aldridge into the band.

Tim

Okay, Nobody's hit on another Obscure band that were killer musicians, and a great singer:

The Sherbs!
Darryl Braithwaite (sp) is a really good songwriter.. I loved songs like "I Have The Skill"...I had two of their albums...There was another song I liked, and I think it was called "We Ride Tonight" or something like that (we're talking 20 years ago).

Rose Tattoo.
Saw them opening for somebody, Kiss? Judas Priest? I don't remember. If you Like Barroom Blues Rock ala AC/DC and Rod Stewart's voice, then These guys are for you.

Dang, Dougie!
You worked for BOA?

My Brother and I used to do "Mutants of The Monster" in a band years ago.
Jim Dandy wules! Looked like Nugent, sang like Francis the Talking Mule! Hahaha

Actually, I met JDM and he seemed like a pretty alright guy to me.

I WOULD HAVE TO SAY ANY BAND, GROUP,ARTIST WHO HAVE PRODUCED 1 OR MORE ALBUMS(CD'S,TAPES)WITH LITTLE TO NO AIRPLAY AT ALL.LTTLE TO NO RECOGNITION FROM THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA(CRITICS).A ONE HIT WONDER!EXAMPLE:RED RYDER...LUNATIC FRINGE.JUST MY OPINION...THAT'S ALL FOLKS!
Tom Cochrane has had some other songs out though besides "Lunatic Fringe"..Ever heard that song "Life is a Highway, I'm gonna drive it all night long"...It's the same guy that did "Lunatic Fringe".

X blows. The singer John Doe and Eddie Vedder(Pearl Jam) did an album in support of the West Memphis Three. The WM3 are 3 teenage punks who brutely raped and murdered 3 children in Arkansas. One of the guys even made a full confession even against the advice of his lawyers, and with no possibility of a re-trial. I asked John Doe about that when he was appearing at the local Borders Bookstore and he just shrugged his shoulders and said "I dunno" in his drug-induced stupor. What a total idiot. I'd never buy an X album.

Man, that guy that confessed is a Moron! I've seen a Box of Nails with a higher IQ than that guy! Come On!

I always wondered if anyone outside of Cleveland, Ohio had ever heard of the Michael Stanley Band.

When I was a youngster of the "North Coast" in the late 70's and early 80's, MSB was the example of what hardworking bar bands could become.

Today, I think Michael Stanely hosts a TV news magazine in Cleveland.
BWAAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

I used to play in a band that did "He Can't Love You Like I love You" by MSB back in the 80's.
They were hot stuff on MTV in it's formative years.

SCREAMING LORD SUTCH!!!!
Wow........that's a definite winner--------I had the album with Page on it(he was on the back cover with his '59 Paul and leather jacket......this must have been around '68-'69).
How about the Strawbs?: :p

I've got a real obscurity for you........I bought an album one time because of the cover ( do you remember doing this? You had never heard of the band, but the cover was cool, and if the lineup was guitar, bass, and drums,YOU BOUGHT IT).......anyway,it was a band called the Beast (or maybe it was Beast). No,this was not a Death-Metal-kill-your-mama-and-eat-the-corpse band, despite the name:this was early '70s,and the drummer was none other than the late great Cozy Powell. It was produced by Felix Pappalardi,I believe.......it had his trademark fuzz bass sound.Any takers?

Tweed,

No connection between BANG and Ursa Major, I just remember them being from about the same time.
