GREAT way to get fat drums, fast, with 3 mics...

I'm with you jeff. Sticky sticky sticky.

About once a week a newbie will ask "how do I get started recording my drums" and this is the answer. I consider this post a *must read*.

Somebody please sticky this. I tried pouring my pepsi on my computer monitor, and that didn't work.

Allright I've read through all of this from advice from mr MadAudio. (thx)

Quick question. I don't have a matched pair of SDC's to use for overheads. Would I be better off using one SDC and one LDC, or just two 57's for the OH's?

Also, for the kick I was going to use a 58 in the hole and possibly an Audix D4 on the beater. Prob another 57 on the snare.

Thoughts?

Absolutely use the condensors. The OH's are the whole kit, so you will need the sensitvity that the 58's, by design, do not provide. Switch the LDC and SDC back and forth to figure which is better where. You should be getting a good dose of kick, particularly beater slap in the OH's, so I'd put the D4 out front to boost the meaty freq's.

can you do this technique even with Metal ?? Will you get enough Toms ?? O_O.. It might sound too "live" ?

can someone judge my recording ?? www.soundclick.com/dodo CLICK ON COMPO 6 (DRUMTRACK!) thats the Latest Drum Track I have.

I used a Behringer XM1800 on Snare and Kick and Behringer C-1 On Overhead. 3 Mics only. I eq'd the kick a little bit for the "click sound" left the snare and OH flat. I have the OH around 3 Stick heights from my snare. Pls Critique on quality..

wanted to clarify

the distance from the snare to the mics is the same for both mics. the distance from the kick to the mics is the same for both mics. the distance from the kick to the mics does not have to be the same as the distance from the snare to the mics.
right?

does anyone have the picture from the first post? it's gone and i'd REALLY like to see it, since this is the method i'll be using at first. thanks a ton.

samples from my first time with this method

http://www.onewingedangelmusic.com/music/helmedrums.htm

it's actually 4 mics - 2 OH, snare, kick

OH left is a Nady CM 90 pencil condenser
OH left is MXL 990 condenser
Kick is SM 58
Snare is SM 57

Honestly, the majority of the snare sound is from the overheads

Chain was mic -> presonus firebox -> Cubase LE ->ibook G3 800

OHs are panned hard left and right, slight reverb & EQ, slight compression on kick and snare to even them out a bit. I think I spent maybe 2 mins total on each track just to mix.

Setup was a total breeze. We did these 4 tracks, setup, breakdown, everything in less than 2 hours. The hardest part about getting the mics set up was finding a position where they weren't going to get whacked. Using a mic cable to measure distances was a breeze.

For my first time micing drums with this method, I'm pretty happy. I'm sure I'll tweak it some more the more I record, but for the first time, not bad (I think). Lemme know your thoughts/comments/criticism!

We're getting ready to try this next week, though our drummer seems skeptical of the results we will get. Trying to debate what to use as overheads - I have access to two Behringer ECM8300's or one Rode NT1 and one GT Condenser. Not sure the best way to go. Also, we plan on micing the kick with a kick drum mic (the bass player has one) - should we mic the snare with a SM57 or is it not necessary?

Also, we have a room that has been "deadend" with some acoustic foam, or a large room with a hardwood floor. What would be the best place for this? Personally, I like a more "open" drum sound, so I am leaning towards the hardwood.

If you use cardoid condenser over heads, you'll get a nice blend between "tight" drumsound and "open room" sound..i. really really liked it with the Oktava MK012's as overheads. Preamps can make a HUGE difference. enjoy!

Damn this thread lived a long time. I'm the man. Several of the biggest threads ever were mine. Bow to me. Just joking.
THe closer in those overheads are, the less room you get. If your room sucks, which most of ours probably do. I try to get them in over the drummers head just out of stick smaking range.
I have been going with an XY a lot lately though, and tom mics all around. Some kits require different approaches.

You rock ,man...This thread alone has helped my drum sound more than anything I've read on micing drums. I use this set-up and it's the best thing I've ever done for my recorded drum sound. Thanx!!!

Even jesus christ only rose from the dead once (or so the commercialised, fear based childrens story goes) this thread has been resurrected..wot...5 times now? It is my new god. But the real question here is, if J C was dead for 3 days before the resurrection, was there any deterioration of flesh? Wasnt there an odor to contend with? What about lack of blood flowing to brain (I guess George Bush has survived for a while so maybe that aint an issue) Infection??? There were a lot of wounds inflicted b4 his death, and the Middle east is a hot area of the world, flies alone would have been a biggy.
