    AD conversion for DAT

For a portable classical-recording rig i intend to use DAT with external converters and preamps; since DAT is 16bit, how can i interface the converters that currently are on the market - my eyes are set on the 20bit Lucid AD/DA If i run the S/PDIF out of the Lucid into a DAT machine (perhaps...

    Processors --> dual vs. single

I'm considering building a dedicated audio computer: 1u rackmount for portable recording; is it better to go 2X PIII or 1X P4? Here's my intended system otherwise if it makes a difference: Hardware: > 1u rack chassis > processor(s) w/ appropriate motherboard > 1 GB DDRAM > Delta 1010 (also up...

    Dell optimization

I just purchased the Audiosport Quattro for use with my Dell Inspiron 4100. In concurrence with information i had heard here and elsewhere, Dell's I/O is a bit sluggish and there is (though minute) a slight hum at certain frequencies. Anyone know of some tricks to speed up the USB? Anything i...

An interesting conundrum (but ever-so-slightly OT, i admit)

My current recording goals include a portable rig for capturing performances of classical music. While much of this will be live, and thus the acoustics unchangeable, i hope to do recording sessions in halls and churches that are not live as well; what sorts of acoustical 'solutions' can i...

A new twist on an old soundcard question

Its been a while since i posted here, but my return to the developing studio brings me some new questions (or variants on old ones, at least) Most of my recording opportunities require a portable rig to record classical (primarily choral and chamber music) and i have thus abandoned my earlier...

    Inexpensive ribbon mic?

Whats the lowest price out there for a decent ribbon mic? The royers are out of my pricerange - are the Beyers perchance cheaper? Is a ribbon a good idea for classical strings and woodwinds or should i go with SD condensor instead? Thanks Macros4

Discreet microphone placement for live recording

I have a slight dilemma: i am recording a small chamber choir and piano perform Gabriele Faure's Messa di Requiem but, as the performance is also a dinner for the board of trustees, (in the same room, immediately after) i have to place the mics where they will not be in the way of anything or...

    Beyer M808 stereo set...

Found this on Ebay - stereo set of vintage Beyer M80s - anyone know anything about these? How would they be for classical recordings? Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1504272243

    Acoustical stuff for travel...

Much of the recording i do (or at least hope to be doing) involves on location work. Are there portable products to assist in fixing the acoustically challenged room (or can something be built - i.e. would a piece of wood with acoustical foam do anything - what about the Markertek sound...

    Decca Tree

In my pursuit of the best method of recording live classical recitals, i have been studying the various stereo techniques and came across the decca tree. Is there a way of employing this with limited resources (can i do it with 2 omnis and a hypercardiod instead of buying another omni - 2...

    Markertek Sound Seal Baffles

Anyone heard of/used Markertek's Sound Seal Baffles - the BAF-2 is a 2'x4' piece of acoustic fiberglass Could several of these be hung on mic stands (or similar) to create a small, portable vocal booth? What about their Jumbo Sound Blankets? I need a smal quasi-iso booth that i can...

    Just inherited...

I recently inherited an ancient (okay... early 60s, but to someone my age [15] that is seemingly prehistoric) Ampex 1/4" reel-to-reel. It's one of the high end consumer models (don't know the model number) unfortunately it doesn't quite work so i'm trying to reverse engineer (and hopefully fix)...

    TecNec

Whats this TecNec cable i heard about at the Markertek website - teflon cable at 10 feet for less than $30 - is that a good deal?

SB live and Audiophile at the same time?

Can i take advantage of the 2 analog and 2 digital ins of the SB live at the same time as using the 4 ins on the 2496 to get 8 tracks of audio in?

    Is this possible?

I was searching the GC site for any interesting deals and found an Avalon DI for less than $500... if one were to run a mic through a standalone phantom power and a impedence transformer and then into the DI would that make an Avalon mic preamp for only ~$525? :D :D :D

    Which one...

In imagining my dream studio :D and trying to decide on the order of future purchases, i came across a dilemma. I have decided that when i next have a significant (i.e. ~$1500-2000) amount of money i will buy a really good stereo pair of mics and a nice preamp. I'm recording live recitals of...

    Case for computer

Has anyone heard of a rack case that can also hold a desktop PC  - i plan on doing live recordings through PC but don't like the options for laptop and was hoping some sort of case existed with which i could put the PC and rack gear (etc.) all in one wheeled cart - has anyone heard of...

    What am i doing wrong?

I recorded a classical recital (piano and vocal) - it was a live performance and thus i used 2 Rode NT3s in X-Y config about 15 feet away from the stage. The room was somewhat boomy, but the recordings sounded very thin and distant? what should i have done differently (i have recently added 2...

    Decisions... decisions...

Would it be more prudent of me to purchase a better LD mic or to upgrade from 16 bit to 24 bit soundcard? If i don't buy the soundcard I can afford an NT1000, if i do i would get either an Oktava 219 or a CAD m33 I am planning on using this for classical/operatic vocals (high bari/tenor) and...
