    Anyone know about the Joe Meek VC1?

    I just got the VC1Q. The Mic pre is smooth if not very detailed. You have much more control with this box than the VC3 - such as phase reverse, pad, EQ in/out switch, enhancer in/out switch. It probably would make a difference to upgrade, but not a huge one. Aaron

    Cheap = noisy ?

    I've eliminated any inputs to the VC1Q, and still, the noise from the makeup gain output. Oh well, I spent $300 for it used, and it's in mint condition. I got it at Zzounds.com, on their used gear page. Not returnable, but perhaps I could go to audioupgrades.com and get a once over/part...

    Cheap = noisy ?

    Actually, the most noise is from a bass guitar direct into the instrument input (the bass guitar has a little self noise, but going direct into a focusrite is really quiet). I've got the mic gain set at 50%, and the EQ set at a mid cut around 1k, and I even cut the high down a couple of DB. No...

    Cheap = noisy ?

    Hello everyone, I just bought a Joe Meek VC1Q, which is the preamp/compressor/EQ/enhancer all in one box. Sounds good, but it's too noisy, espcially on the make up gain output. Anything past 1 o'clock is pretty much unusuable. Do I have a dud, or should I expect certain corners to be cut...

    DBX 566 tube compressor

    Yes, it's the silver series. I read that review, and it seems nice, but I take that with a grain of salt. It's funny that it's not mentioned along with the popular compressors that most people use. It's a little more expensive than the average compressor, but not up there with the well known...

    DBX 566 tube compressor

    Hello, have a chance to pick one up for a good price. I've never hear much about this box, and it's been around for almost 2 years. Not to much action on the forums about this model. It's not mentioned as one of the better compressors (it's around $850 new). So anyone? Aaron

    How do you deal with digital?

    Hello, I'm recording with the Lucid 9624 converters, and they are quite accurate, to say the least. Probably too accurate - many direct recorded sounds come out sounding to bright and shrill. So, what do you do? a low pass filter on the overall mix? darker sounding tube compressors for...

    need new speakers for my fender amp

    I'm looking for a classic blues sound. I'd like the clean sound to break up at lower volumes. It looks like low wattage speakers are the way to go. or?

    need new speakers for my fender amp

    Hello, I have an old 73 twin reverb in a bandmaster head. I'm looking for a new cabinet to go with it. What speakers work well with the old fender sound? should I go 2X12 or 4X12? Looking for some suggestions.... thanks, Aaron

    Antares mic modeler

    I tried downloading the software demo and it wouldn't to work. Oh well. If you go to their website, they talk about the technology used to create the program. It's not the most complicated code, according to them.... They talk about the limitations of the modeling - one being off-axis...

    AKG D160E - worth $150 a pair?

    Hello, I have a chance to get these mics for this price. Can someone tell me about them? They are dynamics - that's all I know... Price seems good for two. thanks, Aaron

    micing amps

    You really have to get a good sound to begin with. Yeah, get the '57. It's cheap and will work. But if your tone sucks, so does everything else. Play around with mic position. Put on headphones and listen to the changes as you move the mic - use low volume on the amp and turn up your...

    The more mics, the better?

    Hello, I know that big studios with a large mic cabinet can choose to mic every instrument with a different mic. It would nice to have the ability to A/B and trial and error for each sound source. So for a home studio, would it be best do stock up on mics over nice mic pres and such (given...
