I have an Ampex ATR 700 which I understand is actually a Teac/Tascam in disguise.
As you may already know, it is a "half track" which uses the entire width of the tape (almost) to record 2 tracks in one direction.
I've been using this open reel tape deck successfully to mix down to in my analogue recording studio. It has been working great but...
One day, I was recording some music and it would only record on channel 1. It would not play back on channel 2. I checked everything and finally changed out the reel of tape.
BINGO - the deck worked fine, recording on both channels and playing back on both channels. What do you think caused this odd problem? Obviously, it was something about that one reel of tape. But what?
