External MIDI controller issue

RetroMan

King Of The 80s
I tried to search for the answer on this forum, but came up with nothing.
I'm trying to control the LM7 drum machine that comes with Cubase using my MIDI controler (...well a synthesizer i'm using as a controller).
I've got the cable connected to the MIDI out on the back of the synth and the MIDI in on my soundcard.

In Cubase there is a red 'MIDI activity' bar that pulses when I hit a key on the synth, so the signal is being received ok but it's not controlling the LM7 - how do I assign it to do so??

If someone could help me with a step by step procedure, that would be awesome as i'm new to MIDI and I've just wasted a few valuable hours trying to get it to work

create a midi track, pull up the LM7 as a instrument. assign the midi out to the LM7 and the midi in as whatever midi port the keyboard is connected to. Thats it. IIRC, it should start mapping at C1

Altitude! thanks!! I realise that I was trying to record into "nothing" all I had to do was create a new "track" and assign my controller to the virtual instrument.

I've just been messing about with the "Embracer" synth and it blows my mind!
