50's Slapback Echo ... how to ?

I'm working with a friend on some recordings in Adobe Audition and am having a heck of a time trying to apply that rockabilly slapback on the vocals. We've messed with delay > echo & reverb effects but haven't achieved the proper sound. Either it repeats too much or too deep.

What effect & settings should we be using? Is there a track duplication "trick"? Or is there a VST plugin specifically made for 50's Slapback? A free one would be nice.

Any help would be appreciated - Thanks!

There's several ways to do it. The easiest is a simple delay somewhere between 50 and 100 ms. just one slap, no extra repeats.

I believe there's a preset echo with that exact name built into Audition 3. If not, its definitely in the Kjaerhus suite which you can download from here: VST & DirectX Plugins. I can check for sure tonight when I'm at my computer if needed.
