beware of Promotional hype
the hype at cakewalk can be somewhat daunting but the difference is primarily one of class. sonar is the full featured product and homestudio is a very trimmed down model with more limitations. If you really need to save money than homestudio will do for most mainstream applications although there some things which may significantly alter your capabilites....like track count and some sync functions...off hand I would say that homestudio is great entry level program to get started tracking on your PC and you can always upgrade when you find that you need other features and often the upgrade is cheaper than the original purchase....i saved money upgrading from HS to PA9...
