Let's talk about buffers

James HE

a spoonfull weighs a ton
I'm trying to find a happy medium that works for me. When I set the playback buffers high enough to avoid glitches, all my moves are like three seconds behind (that's what latency is right?)

I'm just a little confused about where they should be and about how the size of the buffer effects what it does.

Also DMA(?) size- what do I do with that eh?

I'm a dork and don't know the system specs right off hand (it's not my computer) but it's a HP Pavilion with a Celery. The sound card is one of those onboard thingys- Riptide something I guess.

any kind of help for this vage question would be great.

Hi James,

I put together a short list of guidelines on this subject for Electronic Musician magazine a while back. You can find them posted on the Cakewalk site at: http://www.cakewalk.com/Tips/ProAudio_EM_2_99.html

Best,
Scott
