Way-old Alesis question

I have an old HR-16 and an HR-16B. In the old days, you bought a 16B and got a chip to upgrade the 16 and have both linked together. It in essance gave you a keypad with 32 buttons to work from. It was a black chip. About a year ago, I found a place in California that said they had the coding to make a chip for me. They charged 30 bucks or so, and I was a very happy camper- even though there was no warranty. Unfortunately, the guy also didn't think it was necessary that the chip should have anti-static packaging, and of course it didnt work- the tech saying that the chips were coated with anti-static chips- whatever...it didn't work.

Any ideas about what you might recommend, or if you even know about this stuff? For me, it is simply a learning curve- I don't have the time to reprogram any other way right now based on time. Your thoughts are being heard...
