After many years of being "away" from my music I have found a that I would like to record some material at home and on a budget. I've checked out several options and have narrowed it down to The Boss BR 800 and the Zoom R8.I chose these becase they are basically stand alone and 8 tracks should suffice. I need help making the decision. I want something easy to learn, yet with as many bells and whistles as possible. I will be playing all the instruments my self and need built in percussion which I beleive both offer. Any suggestions??

What is it about standalone machines that attracts you and what type of instruments are you recording? What other pieces of gear do you already have (microphones etc...)?

To answer your first question..simplicity. From the info Im gathering, you do all on the unit then master on computer.
As far instruments, the usual..gutiar (electric and acoustic), keyboards. I have a Shure SM57 as well as an condeser mic.

I'm not going to read both specs in entirety but it seems the Boss unit allows four tracks simultaneous recording and the Zoom only two and the Boss has 4 mic inputs and the Zoom 2.

I wouldn't buy either as I think you're paying a price for that simplicity these days, but if you're definite about wanting to go down the portastudio route, and I'd encourage you to read more before deciding, then I'd be leaning towards the BOSS unit on my quick review of their specs.

Other posters with more direct experience may tell you differently, however.

Cheers

Initally that's where I was leaning, but then heard some good things about the Zoom. Appreciate your input....Thanks

I have had good experiences with the Zoom recorders, they are a good platform on a budget. I'd personally stretch to the R16 if in the market as the price difference is not vast for the extra inputs and the fact that working in stereo will halve the available tracks. I have a track in the song writing & composition part of the forum, I recorded on a Zoom, if you want to listen to a track done just on the tracker with no pc manipulation.
The track is, Clouds will fall.

all the best

Sounds great. Do I hear a bit of Flyod? Which Zoom did you record this on??

Probably is a touch of Floyd lol, I have been into them for a lot of years. That was an R24 I used to record that track.
I find them pretty good for their functionality.

all the best
