Zoom r8 many questions?

Hello,

I am a high school band director and I purchased the Zoom R8 to record my school band. I am running to condenser mics through the input. I have track one and two turned on and my levels still do not seem to get very high or hot. Is there a way to boost the signal into the player? Also I want to make sure that I am doing things right. Could someone please post a step by step (treat me like a five year old :)) method for recording with the external mics? thank you, wvtrumpet

This review of the R16,..

Zoom R16
Suggests that the microphone pre amps leave something to be desired and I doubt that the R8 amps are any better. A school would I would think have some sort of mixer about the place? One such could be used to get a better signal into the Zoom.

But "band"? What sort of instruments are you trying to record?
