My missus bought me an R16 for Xmas. The prices in OZ are twice & more that of the US. The lass knows how to do things so she searched for the best price IN Australia & then the best price to bring one in from OS - ie: to import one.
It arrived no prob. BUT the plug, as you'd expect, isn't directly AUS power supply compatible.
I rang/emailed several music stores to get a replacement. The response was uniform: The repondents said that if I would be so kind as to supply the serial number & invoice date so that their importer/supplier could verify that unit was bought LOCALLY they would be able to supply the power adaptor.
I was outraged & as a result investigated.
The good old Japanese engineers had built the adaptor to take most wattage levels around the globe, (100 - 250), & reduce it to the unique power requirment of the R16, (5v). All I needed was an adaptor to plug it into the wall - from 2 vertical parallel pins to 2 angled and one vertical for OZ power points.
Cost - Oh, around AUS$5!!! IMPORTED from HK with FREE postage.
I can understand an importer protecting their patch BUT when such a one charges double or more for a unit, (I know import, GST and associated costs have to be covered but with the AUS$=US$ within less than a cent the reasons for this price hike are less than transparent ), AND allow a little disinformation/disincentive to diseminate re essential "accessories" I was, & remain, less than pleased.
Importation of goods valued at <AUS$1000 is not subject to VAT/GST at present. The power supply issue is solved with a few dollars.
The credibility of some parties is less than it ought be.
The net result is simply WHY buy locally?

Tricks like that are exactly why the EU's Neelie Kroes forces all manufacturers (GSM's to start) to use the same kind of adapter on all low power gear. Done with the proprietary ***** GSM chargers...

I hae heard before about everything in oz costing a ton. I don't get it. Last I have seen you guys have some skyscrapers and highways and airports and stuff, it shouldn't be any more difficult to ship there. Heck, you are closer to Japan than we are, but over here in the USA we get it mostly distributed through Samson. Still, we live in an international community, a small world. Maybe your aussie distributors are just a bunch of mercenary money grubbing bastards who charge more just because they can.

A couple years ago I went on tour and ended up spending a bit in England visiting cousins, one of them asked me to bring over a tascam recorder because it cost half as much than buying it there too, and I could just carry-on it instead of the shipping cost. Its pretty ridiculous when I can get imported beer from australia at the same price as here, and that weighs more than an AC adaptor. I'm sorry it must suck, but hey at least your lass got you a nice piece of gear I guess. Get all your international online 'friends' to let you know next time they headed that way so you can make up a shopping list for their carry-on luggage and open your own little pawn shop! The first reasonably priced music shop in oz woo hoo.

I think the answer to "Why???" is that there are too many "sheeple" in the world, and they just take what is fostered upon them without question. Congrats on you not following them over the cliff (to mix my metaphors a bit.) The savings you realized is your reward.
