trying to add effects to dry tracks. i was under the impression it was possible with afore mentioned machine, but the manual isn't very helpful.
lots of pictures which is good, but lots of words that go with the pics that the manual (or author thereof) assumes i'm familliar with... like "algorythm", which i'm supposed to be able to apply, edit, rename, etc. in order to make something happen, but i don't have a clue what it is... and wikipedia's definition is worse than trying to figure it out by accident.

anyway, is it possible, and if so, how do i add effects to dry tracks? i laid down a dry guitar track just to try the machine out. i can see the effect i'm trying to apply on the display screen, but can't figure out how to make it work.

thanks,
ftk

uhh, no, but it's exactly what i've been looking for... thank you very much.
i'm brand new to this digital recording thing, and trying like heck to only post specific questions on specific forums. tried the noob forum, but this is the first useful information i've gotten.

thanks again,
ftk

This is the n00b forum. Or did this thread get moved here from another forum?

I think he means he SEARCHED in the noob forum but didn't find anything, diggy_dude.

Ah. Like most forum software, the vBulletin search is pretty useless. You can get better results from Google by typing "site:homerecording.com search terms". ;)

I just googled that link after working out what Zoom actually called the process... exact terminology always helps with The Goog...

Or we could answer the question that was asked. Novel concept I know.

The "insert" effect on that box has several "algorhythm"s to it, which just means a chain of effect modules specific to the type of effect (like for guitar effect it would be something along the lines of Compressor+Drive+Cab Sim + NR +chorus+reverb and so on)... The default setting is for the insert effect to be assigned to "input 1" which means it is applied to whatever is coming in before it is put to the track. To change where the effect gets applied to you have to dig into the effects parameters menus and change the 'input source' for the insert effect to the track you want to apply it to instead of having it apply to the actual input. Its around pages 49-50 in the manual how to dig through the menu to change the source.

Simple way of understanding it is like you are telling the machine that one of its tracks thats already recorded is put through the virtual distortion pedal instead of the guitar plugged into the input jack like it normally looks for.

Relax, dude. We were just warming him up until you got here. :D
... warming me up?... yeah, well i guess... i posted the same question on the digital recording and computers forum and that's where i thought the response came from. my humble apologies.
just don't warm me up like that poor kid who asked what mastering is... sheesh!

armistice, thanks for the link, very informative (and i'm a noob over there now too).
cap'n ego, like the readers digest version, and i thank you for that.

all you other peoples, thanks for keepin' me on the ball. sooner or later i'll be off the noob list and you'll find out what i'm really like. ;)

They move threads around sometimes, Frankie. One minute you're posting in one forum, then you find out you're somewhere else the next. :laughings:

Welcome, and enjoy! :D

This doesn't look at all like Kansas anymore!

Relax Capt. Ego...

Personally, I don't have the time to read every manual for every device, but I did understand what was being asked and knew that for a newbie, the process would be difficult to understand - and besides, he's already read the manual and not found it helpful.

I was merely pointing out that the key to finding a better answer for the guy was knowing what Zoom called the process, which I got from the website.... and thus the link from Google.

OK with you?

thanks brother dig,
new to this forum, yes, but familliar and long-time member of a few others...
the fender lounge forums, Fender® Forums • Index page
and the classic mustang forum, Classic Mustang Forum + Classified Ads :: View Forum - Classic Mustang Forum
to name a couple.
i mention those two because i've found the caliber of people there to be most respectful, helpful, and friendly.
i was new at the mustang thing when i signed onto the mustang forum. i'd bought a motor and was having second thoughts about whether it was a good purchase. one of the "senior" members at the CMF who was sending me a lot of advice, diagrams, etc. shot me an e-mail and told me "i'll be at your house saturday at 8:00am." he drove from new london, CT to my house in marshfield, MA and was here on schedule.
anyway, that was 2005, and the motor is still running strong.
when i bought the zoom and was having a hard time with the manual, i figured the best thing to do is look up some folks who might already know what they're doing, and here i am ;)

thanks for all the input, the fine welcome, and i'll be seeing you around.

I would like to see what you posted as an answer if possible? I'm having the same issues with figuring out how to add effects to a dry track. Thanks

To add effects to a dry track, hit effect, turn on effect, select input number or linked pair if recording with an effect, select track number or linked pair for adding effects to a recorded dry track. The effect options there after are self explanatory, use the edit option to get to the next layer of options.

good luck

Tim

I should play with my R16 more often. It's nifty but is in the redundant gear pile I have (Roland Disklab, MT100 4 track, 4 track domestic tape machine), given I use DAW/Reaper with Focusrite Scarlette 8I6O more often than anything else these days.
