Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me ! I am trying to connect via midi a ZOOM MRS-802 and a Roland VS 840 GX. Both are 8 track digital recorders. What I want is to synch them up so that instead of 2 8 tracks I get 1 16 track recorder. I guess all I really want is for one machine to control the start of both. I've gone through the steps in the manuals but it doesn't work.
Anyone have ideas ?

If they both understand Midi Machine Control you're in business. If not, you're out of luck. Look in the index of both manuals under MMC or Midi Machine Control or maybe something like 'remote control of transport' or 'midi external control'.

If you don't find anything in the manuals hook them together with a single midi cable from the Roland midi out to the Zoom midi in, make sure the Roland is in 'internal clock' mode and the Zoom is in 'external clock' mode, then try the transport controls on the Roland. If nothing happens on the Zoom, see if there's a 'device number' because it's a Roland tradition for their device numbers to default to 17. Change the Zoom device number to 17 and try it again. If nothing happens I'm fresh out of ideas...

And if you do get it working, don't print half a drum kit to one machine to one and the other half to the other --- midi sync is not tight enough for that kind of tracking hijinks. On the other hand, it's plenty tight enough for filling up one machine with vocals and the other with instruments.
